1. FC Heidenheim — Last 6
1. FSV Mainz 05 — Last 6

On Saturday afternoon, 1. FC Heidenheim host 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga, and the table gives this one a real edge. Heidenheim sit 17th on 26 points and are still trying to drag themselves clear of danger, while Mainz are a little more comfortable in 10th on 37 points and can still finish the campaign with something respectable to show for it. One side needs survival points. The other wants to keep climbing.

For Frank Schmidt’s Heidenheim, every remaining game carries the weight of a cup tie. They’re not safe, not by a long way, but a decent late-season run has at least kept belief alive. Mainz, under Urs Fischer, arrive with far less pressure on the shoulders and a better away record than their overall place might suggest. They’ve already shown they can score on the road, and they’ve also shown they’re not exactly watertight. That’s the tension here.

These two also come into the match with a recent history of lively, goal-friendly meetings. Mainz beat Heidenheim 2-1 in January, Heidenheim won 2-0 in Mainz in September 2024, and the pair have traded punches more often than not. This one feels like another game where both teams will fancy their chances. Neither defence looks strong enough to dominate the afternoon.

1. FC Heidenheim Form & Analysis

Heidenheim’s recent run has been a proper survival scrap, but there’s been some steel in it. They went to Borussia M’gladbach and came away with a 2-2 draw, then followed that with a 3-1 home win over Union Berlin and another strong home display in a 2-0 victory against FC St. Pauli. A narrow 2-1 defeat at Freiburg was a reminder that they’re still vulnerable away from home, but they didn’t let that knock them off course. Then came the best result of the lot: a 3-3 draw at Bayern München, the sort of game that can change a mood fast. Last time out, they went to Köln and won 3-1. That’s a proper response. Four goals in two away games, six points from the last six, and no sign of a team collapsing.

The picture at home is a bit less polished, but still useful. Heidenheim’s league record on their own ground stands at four wins, five draws and seven defeats, with 23 goals scored and 35 conceded. That’s not the profile of a side that controls matches. It’s the profile of a side that has to live on moments, pressure spells and the odd burst of momentum. Still, they’ve found a way to score regularly enough in front of their own crowd, and that matters for a team fighting at the wrong end. They’ve also been involved in plenty of open games. Six of their last seven have gone over 2.5 goals. That’s not random. They’re rarely dull.

The weaknesses are obvious enough. Heidenheim give up chances, and they don’t need much coaxing to get into a game that turns scrappy or chaotic. But they’ve also got a habit of getting on the front foot early — they’ve been first to score in four of their last five, which is a pretty handy edge for a team like this. The mood around Schmidt’s side feels much better than it did a few weeks ago. Not perfect. Not even close. But better, and that counts for plenty at this stage.

1. FSV Mainz 05 Form & Analysis

Mainz arrive with more points in the bank, but not much momentum. They beat FC St. Pauli 2-1 away on 3 May and that looked like the sort of result that could steady things. Since then, though, they’ve gone backwards. A 3-4 home defeat to Bayern was entertaining but painful, the 1-1 draw at Borussia M’gladbach had its moments, and then came the Conference League trip to Strasbourg, where they lost 4-0 in the knockout phase. Their most recent Bundesliga outing was another setback, a 3-1 home defeat to Union Berlin. That’s two league losses in a row, and both came with goals conceded in bunches. It’s a messy spell.

Their away form is still decent on paper. Mainz are seventh in the Bundesliga away table with 20 points from five wins, five draws and six defeats, and they’ve scored 21 goals on the road. That’s solid enough. It tells you they’re capable of travelling well, and they don’t need to sit deep to be effective. But they’re not exactly shutting anyone out either, having conceded 28 away from home. That’s a big number. It leaves them exposed in games where they’re forced to chase, and Heidenheim can drag opponents into exactly that sort of contest.

There’s a clear pattern in Mainz’s recent league work. They’ve been involved in open matches, they’ve scored their share, and they’ve also let the other side in far too often. Six straight games without a clean sheet is a problem, plain and simple. On the road, that issue becomes even more obvious because they’re happy to play with a bit of ambition. That can be a strength, but it also leaves gaps. Against a Heidenheim side that’s scoring freely and tends to start games well, Mainz can’t afford another loose showing at the back. If they do, they’ll be in trouble quickly.

Head-to-Head

There’s a recent pattern here, and it leans towards a tight but competitive rivalry rather than a one-sided matchup. Mainz edged Heidenheim 2-1 in the reverse fixture in January 2026, while Heidenheim beat them 2-0 in Mainz in September 2024. The sides also drew 1-1 in Heidenheim in May 2024, and there’s been no shortage of close scorelines across the last few meetings.

One detail stands out more than the rest: under 2.5 goals has landed in four of the last five head-to-heads. That’s a fair warning. These clubs can still produce open spells, but when they meet, the result has often been decided by fine margins rather than chaos. Don’t expect a complete shootout from the first whistle.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We’re backing Both Teams To Score at 4/9 here. That price is short, but it still looks the right call. Heidenheim have scored in six of their last seven league matches and Mainz have gone six games without a clean sheet, so the logic is pretty straightforward. One side’s back line is leaking, the other side are finding ways to score at home and away. That’s enough for a BTTS play.

The scoreline leans 1-2 to Mainz, which fits the way these two are trending. Heidenheim have the edge in current spirit and home momentum, but Mainz have been the better side over the season and carry enough attacking quality to nick this. The slight tension is the head-to-head record, where lower-scoring games have been common. Still, with both defences looking shaky, it’s hard to trust either side to keep a lid on things for 90 minutes.

If you want a bigger price, Over 2.5 Goals is worth a glance, especially with both teams regularly involved in high-scoring games lately. But BTTS is the cleaner angle.
