Atlético Madrid — Last 6
Athletic Club — Last 6

Atlético Madrid host Athletic Club at the Metropolitano on Saturday evening in a LaLiga meeting that still carries real weight at both ends of the European chase. Diego Simeone’s side are fourth with 57 points, which keeps them in the thick of the race for a Champions League place, but they can’t afford many more slips if they want to stay clear of the pack behind them. Athletic arrive ninth on 41 points, a long way off the European places and needing a strong finish to turn their season into something more than mid-table comfort.

There’s pressure on both benches, just in different forms. Atlético are expected to be in this conversation every spring, and their home record again points to a team that should be much higher up the table when they play at the Metropolitano. Athletic, meanwhile, have had too many flat away days to suggest a sudden surge is coming. Yet Ernesto Valverde’s team are still awkward enough to make this a proper contest. They beat Osasuna 1-0 on 21 April, and with Atlético having dropped points and then some in recent weeks, the visitors won’t travel in fear.

The backdrop also matters. Atlético have had a brutal run of fixtures, mixing league duty with a Champions League knockout tie against Barcelona and a Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad. That schedule has asked a lot of Simeone’s squad. Athletic’s season has been far more straightforward, but they’ve struggled to turn isolated good results into a meaningful run. This feels like one of those games where the home side should have more of the ball, more of the territory and more of the chances — yet the away side still have enough threat to nick a goal.

Atlético Madrid Form & Analysis

Atlético’s recent run has been messy, and the away loss at Elche on 22 April summed up a side that’s been leaking chances for weeks. They went down 3-2 despite Nicolás González striking early, then Andre Silva’s penalty and another González goal kept them in it, only for Elche to keep finding space and punish the gaps. The numbers from that game were ugly for Simeone: 1.01 expected goals, 1.89 against, and 14 shots faced. That’s not the sort of control Atlético are built on.

Before that, they drew 2-2 at home with Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey, a game that had the feel of a side doing just enough to stay alive without ever truly taking charge. The Champions League tie with Barcelona was the same story in different colours. They beat Barcelona 2-0 away on 8 April, which was a proper statement on the road, but then lost 1-2 at home to the same opponents six days later and were beaten 2-1 away by Sevilla in LaLiga on 11 April. Back on 4 April, Barcelona had already come to the Metropolitano and won 2-1 in the league. That’s four defeats in six, and it’s not the sort of sequence that screams stability.

The good news for Atlético is that their home record is still excellent. They’ve won 13, drawn one and lost two in league matches at the Metropolitano, scoring 35 and conceding only 14. That’s elite home form by any standard, and it’s the main reason they’re still clinging to fourth place. The problem is that the recent defensive wobble isn’t a one-off. They’ve now gone four games without a clean sheet, and this is a team that has also been involved in seven of their last eight league games ending with both teams scoring. You don’t need to be a genius to see the pattern. They’re always in the match, but they’re not shutting it down.

Simeone’s side still carry the usual Atletico edge in their own stadium. They’re aggressive, physical and capable of pinning opponents in. But the balance looks off right now. If they score first, they can still manage games. If they concede first, the whole thing gets loose. That’s where Athletic come into the picture.

Athletic Club Form & Analysis

Athletic arrive with a much simpler recent story. They beat Osasuna 1-0 on 21 April, and that was the kind of game they’ve been winning all season in bursts rather than runs. Gorka Guruzeta scored in the 16th minute, and after that it was more about survival than swagger. The xG numbers were hardly convincing either — 0.55 for Athletic, 1.12 for Osasuna — but they did enough, and sometimes that’s all Valverde needs from his side. Clean, compact, one goal. Job done.

The problem is the wider picture. Their last six league matches read like a side stuck between effort and inconsistency. They lost 2-1 at Villarreal on 12 April, then followed it with a 2-0 defeat away at Getafe on 5 April. Before that came a 2-1 home win over Real Betis and a 3-0 defeat at Girona. They also lost 1-0 at home to Barcelona on 7 March. That’s a lot of travel, a lot of frustration and not much momentum. You can see why they’re ninth rather than pushing the European places more aggressively.

Away from home, Athletic have been poor. Their league record on the road is only three wins, three draws and nine losses, with 13 goals scored and 26 conceded. That’s a serious issue. They don’t travel like a side who can dominate games. They travel like a team hoping to keep things tight and steal moments. Can they do that at the Metropolitano? They’ll try, but the home environment won’t help them much.

Still, Valverde’s side aren’t toothless. They’ve got 34 league goals overall, and the fact they can find a goal in awkward places means Atlético can’t just assume a clean sheet will arrive. Athletic have also shown they can be stubborn enough to stay alive even when they’re not playing well. The 1-0 win over Osasuna was evidence of that. So was the fact they were competitive in patches against Villarreal and Betis. But there’s a ceiling here, and their away record tells you exactly where it is.

Head-to-Head

These two have been trading tight results for a while, and the recent meetings point to a rivalry that rarely opens up. Athletic beat Atlético 1-0 in Bilbao on 6 December 2025, which continued a pattern of narrow margins in this fixture. Atlético won 1-0 at home in March 2025 and also won 1-0 away in August 2024. Before that came a 3-1 Atletico victory in April 2024, but the general tone has been tense and low-scoring.

You don’t have to dig far to find the pressure point in this matchup. Four of the last five league meetings have gone under 2.5 goals, and that fits the broader feel of the contest. It’s rarely a shootout. These sides know each other too well for that.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

Both Teams To Score at 8/11 is the play here. Atlético’s home record is too strong to back against outright, but their defensive line has been far from watertight recently, and that four-match run without a clean sheet matters. Athletic, for all their away problems, have still got enough to nick one if Atlético leave spaces behind them — and this fixture has already shown a habit of producing tight but competitive scorelines.

A 2-1 Atlético win feels the most realistic call. Simeone’s team should have more control and more quality at home, but Athletic won’t need many invitations to threaten. If you wanted a more conservative angle, Atlético Madrid to win and both teams to score has real appeal, though BTTS on its own gives you cleaner value at the quoted price.
