That schedule has asked a lot of Simeone’s squad. Athletic’s season has been far more straightforward, but they’ve struggled to turn isolated good results into a meaningful run. The Champions League tie with Barcelona was the same story in different colours. They beat Barcelona 2-0 away on 8 April, which was a proper statement on the road, but then lost 1-2 at home to the same opponents six days later and were beaten 2-1 away by Sevilla in LaLiga on 11 April. Back on 4 April, Barcelona had already come to the Metropolitano and won 2-1 in the league. That’s four defeats in six, and it’s not the sort of sequence that screams stability.
The good news for Atlético is that their home record is still excellent. They’ve won 13, drawn one and lost two in league matches at the Metropolitano, scoring 35 and conceding only 14. That’s elite home form by any standard, and it’s the main reason they’re still clinging to fourth place. The problem is that the recent defensive wobble isn’t a one-off. They’ve now gone four games without a clean sheet, and this is a team that has also been involved in seven of their last eight league games ending with both teams scoring. You don’t need to be a genius to see the pattern. They’re always in the match, but they’re not shutting it down.
Simeone’s side still carry the usual Atletico edge in their own stadium. They’re aggressive, physical and capable of pinning opponents in. But the balance looks off right now. If they score first, they can still manage games. If they concede first, the whole thing gets loose. That’s where Athletic come into the picture.
Athletic arrive with a much simpler recent story. They beat Osasuna 1-0 on 21 April, and that was the kind of game they’ve been winning all season in bursts rather than runs. The problem is the wider picture. Their last six league matches read like a side stuck between effort and inconsistency. They lost 2-1 at Villarreal on 12 April, then followed it with a 2-0 defeat away at Getafe on 5 April. Before that came a 2-1 home win over Real Betis and a 3-0 defeat at Girona. They also lost 1-0 at home to Barcelona on 7 March. That’s a lot of travel, a lot of frustration and not much momentum. You can see why they’re ninth rather than pushing the European places more aggressively.
Away from home, Athletic have been poor. Their league record on the road is only three wins, three draws and nine losses, with 13 goals scored and 26 conceded. That’s a serious issue. They don’t travel like a side who can dominate games. They travel like a team hoping to keep things tight and steal moments. Can they do that at the Metropolitano? They’ll try, but the home environment won’t help them much.
Still, Valverde’s side aren’t toothless. They’ve got 34 league goals overall, and the fact they can find a goal in awkward places means Atlético can’t just assume a clean sheet will arrive. Athletic have also shown they can be stubborn enough to stay alive even when they’re not playing well. The 1-0 win over Osasuna was evidence of that. So was the fact they were competitive in patches against Villarreal and Betis. But there’s a ceiling here, and their away record tells you exactly where it is.
These two have been trading tight results for a while, and the recent meetings point to a rivalry that rarely opens up. Athletic beat Atlético 1-0 in Bilbao on 6 December 2025, which continued a pattern of narrow margins in this fixture. Atlético won 1-0 at home in March 2025 and also won 1-0 away in August 2024. Before that came a 3-1 Atletico victory in April 2024, but the general tone has been tense and low-scoring.
You don’t have to dig far to find the pressure point in this matchup. Four of the last five league meetings have gone under 2.5 goals, and that fits the broader feel of the contest. It’s rarely a shootout. These sides know each other too well for that.

A 2-1 Atlético win feels the most realistic call. Simeone’s team should have more control and more quality at home, but Athletic won’t need many invitations to threaten.
