FC Twente — Last 6
Sparta Rotterdam — Last 6

FC Twente welcome Sparta Rotterdam to De Grolsch Veste on Sunday evening in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, with both sides still chasing something meaningful in the closing stretch of the season. Twente are sitting fifth with 55 points and have put themselves in a strong position in the race for Europe, while Sparta arrive in ninth on 43 points and are trying to finish the campaign with some momentum after an uneven spring.

There’s a bit more pressure on the home side here. John van den Brom’s team have been solid rather than spectacular, but they’ve stayed in the mix by avoiding collapse and by picking up enough points in the big moments. Sparta, under Maurice Steijn, have had a looser, more volatile season. They’ve scored goals, but they’ve also leaked too many. That leaves them in mid-table territory, short of the top-half push they’d have wanted, and needing a strong finish to avoid simply drifting to the line.

The journey to this point doesn’t involve a cup run or European knockout drama, but the league context still matters. Twente’s place in the table gives this game real weight. A home win would keep their European chase on track and protect them from late pressure below. For Sparta, an away result would not transform the season, but it would at least show they can travel and trouble one of the league’s more reliable sides. They’ve got enough attacking threat to make this uncomfortable. The problem is the other end. That’s been the story for a while.

FC Twente Form & Analysis

Twente come into this one unbeaten in five league games, and that run has kept them steady at exactly the right time. It hasn’t all been smooth, mind you. Their last two outings finished 2-2 away at AZ Alkmaar and 1-1 at home to NEC Nijmegen, so the margins have tightened a little. Before that, though, they put together three straight wins: 2-1 at home to FC Volendam, 2-1 away at Ajax, and 2-1 away at Fortuna Sittard. That’s a useful spell. Not flashy, but very effective.

The most recent trip to AZ told a mixed story. Twente were under pressure for long stretches, produced only 0.47 xG, and were out-shot 18 to 9, yet they still found a way to leave with a point from a 2-2 draw. That says something about their resilience, but it also hints at a side that can be pushed around when the tempo rises. A home draw with NEC followed, and although they didn’t lose either match, the slightly flat ending to the recent run does suggest they’ve lost a touch of sharpness in front of goal. Still, they’ve only lost once in their last six. That’s the sort of base that keeps you in the European conversation.

At home, Twente’s record is decent rather than dominant: eight wins, five draws and three defeats, with 25 goals scored and 16 conceded. Those numbers point to a team that usually does enough at De Grolsch Veste, even if they don’t always control games from start to finish. The attacking output is respectable, the defensive record solid, and their season overall — 54 scored and 35 conceded — fits that picture. They don’t suffocate opponents, but they do punish mistakes. Against a Sparta side that’s been loose at the back, that should matter.

Sparta Rotterdam Form & Analysis

Sparta’s recent form is more erratic. Their last six league matches have produced one win, three draws and two defeats, and the pattern is messy rather than encouraging. The latest result was a 2-2 home draw with Go Ahead Eagles, a match that swung around a bit and again showed both their attacking intent and their defensive fragility. Before that came a heavy 4-1 loss away to SC Telstar, a 2-0 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven, a goalless draw at NAC Breda, a 2-0 home win over FC Volendam, and another bruising away defeat at Ajax, where they were beaten 4-0.

That sequence tells you plenty. Sparta can score if they’re given space, but they’re too easy to play through when the opposition gets on top. Their most recent home draw with Go Ahead produced 25 shots in total and an xG figure of 1.89, so they did create. Even so, they still allowed 2.08 xGA and had to survive a late red card for Oskar Siira Sivertsen. Not ideal. Not even close. They’re game enough, but they don’t protect their own box well enough, and that usually drags them into open, awkward matches.

Their away form is patchy too. Six wins, two draws and eight defeats on the road is hardly disastrous, but the goals against column is ugly enough: 31 conceded away from home. They’ve scored 19 themselves, which tells you they’re no strangers to finding the net on their travels, but clean sheets have been scarce. In a season where the away average across the league is already less productive than home football, Sparta have still been too generous. You’d expect Twente to get chances here. A lot of them.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has a clear recent pattern, and it favours Twente heavily. They beat Sparta 5-1 in Rotterdam on 19 September 2025, and followed that with a 2-0 away win on 4 May 2025. Go back a little further and the meetings were tighter, but Twente have still had the edge across the last few seasons, including a 2-1 home win in March 2024 and a 1-0 victory in June 2023.

The strongest angle from the head-to-head is simple: Sparta haven’t kept Twente quiet for long enough. Twente have gone 13 meetings without losing to them, and Sparta have gone 12 head-to-heads without a clean sheet. That’s not an accident. It’s a pattern, and one that fits the eye test here too. Twente usually get chances in this fixture, and Sparta usually concede them.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 2/5 here. If you want a few more angles around BTTS tips, our BTTS tips page pulls together BTTS tips with more both-teams-to-score angles across the schedule. It’s short enough in the market for a reason. Twente have gone through five straight league matches without a defeat, and four of their last five have cleared the 2.5 line. Sparta are hardly a cautious away side either — they’ve scored on the road, but they’ve also shipped 31 away goals across the season. That combination usually leads to goals. Simple as that.

Twente’s home record also nudges this way. They’re solid enough to contribute two of their own, while Sparta’s defensive numbers away from home point to at least one opening at the other end. The projected 2-1 scoreline fits the shape of it nicely. Twente should have the better structure and enough control to edge the points, but Sparta’s attack is good for one reply if the game opens up. One alternative angle worth a glance is Both Teams to Score, but the goals line is the cleaner play.
