Helmond Sport — Last 6 matches
VVV-Venlo — Last 6 matches

Helmond Sport host VVV-Venlo at the GS Staalwerken Stadion on Friday evening, 17 April 2026, in an Eerste Divisie meeting that matters more for pride and momentum than for promotion dreams. Neither side is in the chase for the very top, but there’s still plenty on the line. Helmond are trying to stop the slide and drag themselves clear of the lower reaches of the table, while VVV are looking to finish with some credibility after a season that’s had far too many flat spells.

It’s the kind of game that can easily drift, then suddenly open up. Helmond sit 19th with 36 points, and their home record has been a rare source of resistance. VVV are 13th on 42 points, and they’ve been far better going forward than their league position suggests. Put those two profiles together and you get a match that feels built for goals. Both teams need a lift. Neither defence looks fully trustworthy.

There’s also a neat bit of narrative edge here: VVV have already had the better of Helmond in recent meetings, but Helmond have landed a few blows of their own in this fixture over the past couple of years. That won’t mean much once the whistle goes. What matters is whether Helmond can turn home solidity into something sharper in the final third, and whether VVV can keep their attacking rhythm going away from home, where they’ve been more vulnerable.

Helmond Sport Form & Analysis

Helmond’s last month has been a slog. The 0-0 draw at MVV Maastricht on 10 April extended their unbeaten run to two, but that sounds better than it actually is. Before that, they had been held 2-2 at home by RKC Waalwijk, and the frustration has been obvious for a while. Their only recent losses came at Jong AZ Alkmaar, where they went down 2-0, at SC Cambuur in a tight 1-0 defeat, and at Jong FC Utrecht, another narrow loss by a single goal. In between, there was a 1-1 draw at Roda JC Kerkrade. It’s been a grind. No flow, no momentum, and too many matches where they’ve done just enough to stay in the game without ever looking like they’ll own it.

That winless run now stands at nine matches, with their last victory arriving all the way back on 13 February away to Almere City FC. That’s a long time to go without three points. Still, Helmond’s home numbers give them something to cling to. At their ground this season they’ve taken 26 points from 18 matches, winning seven, drawing five and losing six, with 29 goals scored and 28 conceded. Those are decent figures for a side sitting 19th overall. At home, they’ve generally been harder to break down, even if the attack hasn’t always been ruthless enough to turn control into wins. The issue is obvious enough: they’re not losing by much, but they’re not doing enough at the sharp end either.

What stands out is how often Helmond’s matches get stuck in that awkward middle ground. They’ll compete, they’ll hang around, and then they’ll fail to make the decisive moment count. The xG from the MVV game told the same story: 0.38 created, 0.66 conceded. That’s not a side in charge of proceedings. If they’re going to get something here, they’ll need much more punch in the final third than they’ve shown in recent weeks. One good sign is that they’ve been a little more stable defensively at home, but that alone won’t be enough if they don’t start forcing the issue. Three wins from nine at home? No. It’s not been that simple, but the lack of cutting edge is plain.

VVV-Venlo Form & Analysis

VVV arrive with a bit more life in their attack, even if their results have been erratic. Their last six tell a classic stop-start story. They were held 3-3 at home by De Graafschap on 11 April in a game that had chaos from the first half onwards. Before that, they lost 1-0 away to Jong PSV Eindhoven, beat SC Cambuur 3-0 at home, drew 2-2 at FC Emmen, then lost 1-0 at home to Jong Ajax and 2-1 away to MVV Maastricht. That’s not a run of form that inspires huge confidence, but it does show a side capable of scoring in bursts. When VVV get moving, they can make a mess of a game very quickly.

Their home win over Cambuur was the cleanest expression of what they can do when the front line clicks. The 3-3 against De Graafschap was messier, but it also showed they’ve got enough attacking threat to recover from setbacks. In that match they posted 18 shots, five on target and five big chances, and that part matters here. They don’t need many openings to turn a game into a shootout. On the road, though, they’ve been less convincing. Their away record reads five wins, four draws and nine defeats, with 24 scored and 30 conceded. That’s fine on paper, but the losses tell you the fuller story. They can be exposed away from home, and they’ve only kept one clean sheet in their recent away defeats. Not ideal.

The bigger issue for Peter Uneken’s side is consistency. They’ve scored 47 goals across the league season, which is a healthy return, but they’ve also leaked 55. That’s why they’re stuck in mid-table rather than climbing higher. They’ve got enough attacking quality to threaten anyone in this division, but they don’t control matches well enough to close the door. The recent 3-3 draw with De Graafschap was pure proof of that. They can hurt teams. They can also let them back in. On the road, that often turns a decent away display into wasted work.

Head-to-Head

These two have produced a few lively meetings over the past couple of seasons, and the pattern is hard to ignore. VVV beat Helmond 2-1 in September 2025 and thumped them 4-1 in April of the same year, which is the sort of result that lingers in the memory. Helmond have had their own moments too, though. They won 3-0 at home in August 2024 and 4-0 away in October 2023, so this isn’t a fixture where one side has completely owned the other.

The overall thread is straightforward: goals usually arrive. Four of the last five meetings have gone over 2.5 goals, and both teams have regularly found a way to get on the scoresheet in this matchup. That fits the profile here almost too neatly. Both defences have holes. Both attacks have enough to do damage. You don’t need to squint too hard to see where this one is heading.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 4/6 for this one. It’s short enough for a reason. Helmond’s home record has been fairly open, VVV have scored 47 league goals, and both teams have been involved in plenty of high-event matches lately. VVV’s 3-3 draw with De Graafschap and Helmond’s 2-2 at home to RKC Waalwijk are the kind of results that point you in one direction. Neither side is reliable enough to trust for a clean, controlled night.

The match-up itself leans that way too. Helmond have struggled to win for nine games, but they’ve still kept themselves competitive in matches at home. VVV, meanwhile, are capable of scoring first and making life awkward, yet they rarely shut things down. That’s why 1-2 feels like the right scoreline. VVV have the slightly sharper attack, Helmond should find a goal of their own at home, and a 2-1 away win lands neatly with the goals market. If you want a saver, both teams to score has plenty of appeal as well.
