HNK Rijeka — Last 6
HNK Vukovar 1991 — Last 6

HNK Rijeka host HNK Vukovar 1991 on Friday evening in the HNL, with both sides still chasing very different targets as the season moves into its decisive stretch. Rijeka are sitting fourth and trying to keep their European ambitions alive, while Vukovar are down in 10th and looking over their shoulder rather than up the table. That gap in the standings matters. So does the form underneath it.

For Rijeka, this is the kind of home game they’re expected to win if they want to stay in the mix near the top end. For Vukovar, it’s a chance to nick something from a side above them and keep their survival push from slipping into real trouble. They’re not here to admire the occasion. They need points. And they’ll need a brave performance to get them.

The first meeting between these teams this season ended in a tight 1-0 Rijeka win in March, and that’s probably the most useful reference point going into this one. Rijeka won’t want to overcomplicate it. Vukovar, though, have shown enough away from home to suggest they won’t just roll over. One thing’s clear already: if Rijeka are sloppy, this could get awkward.

HNK Rijeka Form & Analysis

Rijeka arrive here in better shape than their league position might first suggest. Their recent run has had the usual mix of sharp highs and frustrating flat spots, but the latest result was the kind that restores confidence. Away at Lokomotiva Zagreb on 3 May, they won 3-0 and looked in control from the first whistle. Daniel Adu-Adjei scored twice, Merveille Ndockyt added the third, and the numbers were tidy too: 2.05 xG, just 0.46 against, 10 shots to 3, and only one effort on target allowed. That was a proper away performance. Clean, efficient, ruthless.

Before that, they held Hajduk Split to a 0-0 draw at home, which tells you Rijeka can still lock things down when they need to. But the couple of games before that were less convincing. They lost 1-0 away to Varaždin and drew 2-2 at Dinamo Zagreb, so the away form has been a bit uneven, even if the draw in Zagreb was a decent result on paper. At home, they were beaten 2-0 by Osijek in mid-April. That hurt. It wasn’t a one-off either, because their home performances this season have been steady rather than dominant.

Overall, Rijeka’s home record stands at seven wins, five draws and four defeats, with 24 goals scored and 15 conceded at their own ground. Those aren’t bad figures, but they’re not the sort that scream relentless pressure. They’ve been good enough to stay competitive, not good enough to scare everyone. Still, the balance is decent. They’re unbeaten in two now, and that 3-0 at Lokomotiva may be the sort of result that sharpens the edge in the final third. The issue is whether they can maintain that level when the game doesn’t open up. Against Vukovar, that may matter more than usual.

HNK Vukovar 1991 Form & Analysis

Vukovar come into this with a little more positivity than their place in the table suggests. They beat Osijek 1-0 at home on 2 May, and that was the sort of result that gives a relegation-threatened side belief. Jakov Puljić’s second-half goal settled it, and even if the underlying numbers weren’t brilliant — just 0.48 xG and 1.20 against — they got the job done. That’s the key point. Good teams can dominate and lose. Struggling sides often have to win ugly. Vukovar did exactly that.

Their form before that was mixed, which is putting it mildly. They drew 2-2 away at Slaven Belupo, which was a useful point on the road, but they also lost 2-1 at home to Gorica. Before that came a decent 2-1 away win at Istra 1961, which remains their only away victory of the season. That one matters here, because it shows they can break through on the road if the conditions are right. Mind you, it’s still a lone bright spot in a very bleak away record.

Away from home, Vukovar have only seven points all season. That comes from one win, four draws and 11 defeats, with 12 goals scored and 33 conceded. That’s rough. Very rough. You don’t need to dress it up. They’ve lost far too often on the road, and the goals against column is the real problem — once teams get on top of them, the cracks tend to widen. They’ve also been involved in a lot of games where both sides have found the net, and that pattern is hard to ignore. Even when Vukovar lose, they usually don’t go quietly. They’ve scored in enough matches to keep things interesting, but they’ve also let too many opponents get in.

The flip side? They’ve shown a bit of stubbornness lately. They’ve got at least something to build on from the Osijek win, and that can’t be dismissed. But this is a much harder assignment. Rijeka are stronger, more settled, and far more reliable at home. Can Vukovar turn this into a scrap? Maybe. Can they keep it tight for 90 minutes? That’s a much tougher ask.

Head-to-Head

These sides have already met three times in competitive football recently, and Rijeka have edged the short-term battle. In March, they won 1-0 away at Vukovar, and back in December they beat them 3-1 at home. Vukovar’s best result in that stretch came in September 2025, when they won 3-2 at home in a lively contest. So there’s no total domination here, but Rijeka have had the cleaner recent edge.

The wider pattern is useful too. These games haven’t exactly been cagey. The 3-1 and 3-2 meetings suggest chances do appear, and Vukovar have had a habit of finding a goal in this fixture even when they’ve come up short. Rijeka won the latest meeting, though, and that’s the version they’ll want to repeat.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We are backing Both Teams To Score at 10/11 here, and it looks a fair price. If you want more detail on the BTTS market, our guide to BTTS betting breaks down the BTTS market and shows when both-teams-to-score bets tend to hold up best. Rijeka are the better side and the home team, so they should do enough to score. Vukovar’s recent away work has been messy, but they’ve still scored in enough of their matches to make this market alive — especially with Rijeka not always watertight at home and the H2H having produced goals on both sides before.

There’s a decent chance this finishes 2-1 to Rijeka, which fits the shape of the game nicely. Rijeka’s home advantage and sharper overall quality should tell, but Vukovar have enough threat to nick one if the hosts switch off. If you want a slightly safer route, Rijeka to win and both teams to score is the angle I’d keep in mind, though the straight BTTS play is the cleaner one.
