Rot-Weiss Essen — Last 6
1. FC Saarbrücken — Last 6

Rot-Weiss Essen welcome 1. FC Saarbrücken to the Stadion an der Hafenstraße on 26 April 2026 with the promotion picture and relegation worry pulling the fixture in opposite directions. Essen sit second in the 3. Liga and know a strong run-in could turn a good season into a serious title charge. Saarbrücken, down in 16th, are still looking over their shoulder and need points to shut down any late-season nerves. That gap in the table is real. So is the pressure.

There’s more to it than positions alone. Uwe Koschinat’s side have built a formidable home base, while Argirios Giannikis’ visitors have been one of the division’s weakest travellers. Yet this isn’t a cosy stroll for Essen. The reverse meeting in November ended 3-2 to Rot-Weiss in Saarbrücken, and these two have traded punches often enough that nobody should assume a routine home win. Goals tend to follow when they meet. Plenty of them.

For Essen, the task is simple enough on paper: keep the pressure on the leaders, protect their strong home record and avoid letting a mid-table opponent drag them into a scrap. Saarbrücken need something similar, just from the other end. A point would help. Three would be huge. The problem is that away from home they’ve been far too easy to live with.

Rot-Weiss Essen Form & Analysis

Essen come into this one off the back of a wild trip to Energie Cottbus, where they lost 5-3 after being dragged into a game with no brakes on it. That result stung, because it snapped a lovely run. Before that, they had beaten FC Ingolstadt 4-1 at home, gone to Schweinfurt and won 3-1, edged MSV Duisburg 1-0 at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße and taken a 2-1 win at Viktoria Köln. Even their friendly against Bochum ended in a 4-0 away victory. That’s five wins in six before the Cottbus defeat. Good form, by any standard.

What stands out most is how alive Essen are in attacking areas. They’ve scored 72 league goals this season, which is serious production, and at home they’ve been even more convincing with 37 goals in 17 matches. That’s 11 wins, four draws and only two defeats on their own patch, plus just 20 conceded. Strong. Very strong. They don’t just edge games either. At times they blow them open, like the 4-1 against Ingolstadt. The Cottbus defeat was the outlier, not the pattern.

Still, there’s a flip side. Essen have gone three home games without a clean sheet, and the 5-3 in Cottbus was a reminder that their back line can be pulled apart if the tempo gets out of hand. This side likes to attack, likes to push numbers forward and usually gives you a match with chances at both ends. Their home record screams control, but the recent defensive wobble says Saarbrücken will get looks. On balance, Essen’s offensive edge is the big story. They’ve also opened the scoring in seven straight league matches. That’s not a small detail. It tells you who’s likely to impose themselves early.

1. FC Saarbrücken Form & Analysis

Saarbrücken arrive in steadier but much less convincing shape. Their last six league matches have been a mix of stubborn draws and frustrating near-misses: a 0-0 at home to TSV 1860 München, a 2-0 defeat at TSV Havelse, a 1-1 draw with Alemannia Aachen, a 1-0 win over FC Ingolstadt, a 3-0 loss at SC Verl and another 1-1 draw with Jahn Regensburg. That’s the picture of a team that can stay in games, but rarely controls them for long enough to turn pressure into points.

Their away record is the real problem. One win, seven draws and nine defeats from 17 trips is a grim return, and they’ve only scored 16 away goals while conceding 31. That’s relegation-level travelling form. They can nick a result on the road, but the numbers are blunt: too often they’re chasing, too often they’re giving up territory, and too often they’re leaving with very little to show for it. The 2-0 loss at Havelse and the 3-0 reverse at Verl underline that point.

There are still signs of resistance. The 0-0 against 1860 München was tight enough, and the 1-0 win over Ingolstadt shows they can squeeze out a result when the game stays compressed. But Saarbrücken haven’t won in three, and their away performances tend to rely on staying compact for long spells. That’s a hard ask here. Essen’s home pressure is constant, and Saarbrücken don’t look strong enough to absorb it for 90 minutes without crack appearing somewhere. Can they keep it tight and nick something late? It feels like a stretch.

Head-to-Head

The recent meetings lean towards chaos rather than caution. Essen beat Saarbrücken 3-2 in November 2025, and that followed a 3-0 Saarbrücken win in Essen in April 2025. Before that, Saarbrücken had edged a 1-0 home win in December 2024, while the teams shared a 1-1 draw in April 2024. There’s no steady rhythm here. One side tends to land a blow, then the other answers in kind.

One pattern does stand out. Essen have failed to keep a clean sheet in six straight meetings with Saarbrücken. That matters here, because it fits with Saarbrücken’s habit of finding at least something in this fixture even when they’re not enjoying the season overall. It also warns against assuming a simple home shutout. This one has a decent chance of getting messy again.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We’re backing Both Teams To Score at 8/15 for this clash. It’s a short price, but it’s a fair one. Essen have been scoring for fun at home and have gone seven league games in a row without failing to score first, while Saarbrücken’s away record is poor but not toothless enough to dismiss outright. They’ve still got enough about them to nick one if Essen’s defence gets stretched, and that’s been happening more often lately.

The 2-1 correct score feels the right call. Essen should have the better chances and the stronger territorial control, but Saarbrücken’s recent tendency to drag opponents into open games keeps the door open for a goal at the other end. If you want a slightly more aggressive angle, Over 2.5 Goals also looks very live, especially with Essen’s home matches producing goals at a healthy clip.
