Willem II Tilburg — Last 6
Almere City FC — Last 6

Willem II Tilburg return to their own ground on Saturday evening with a 1-0 advantage over Almere City FC in the Keuken Kampioen Playoffs, and that slim lead changes the mood of the tie completely. It’s not a two-goal cushion, not even close, but it does mean John Stegeman’s side can approach the second leg with control rather than panic. For Almere City and Jeroen Rijsdijk, the task is obvious: turn the tie around away from home or see the promotion dream slip.

There’s enough history between these two to give this one a bit of edge as well. Willem II have already beaten Almere three times in the last seven meetings, and they’ve done it in the most recent two: 2-1 in Tilburg on 12 April, then 1-0 in Almere on 13 May. That sequence matters. So does the fact that Willem II have now gone eight games without a loss. They’re not flying by accident. Almere, meanwhile, arrive with one win in their last three and no clean sheet in three, which is hardly the kind of profile you want heading into a must-win playoff night.

This is knockout football, so the margins are tiny. A single goal can swing the mood, the structure and the whole rhythm of the contest. Willem II don’t need to chase it. Almere do. That difference should shape the evening.

Willem II Tilburg Form & Analysis

Willem II have timed their run well. Their last six matches read like a side growing into the business end of the season, not stumbling towards it. They started this sequence with a 2-1 home win over Almere City on 12 April, then went to FC Dordrecht and came away with a 2-1 away victory on 24 April. After that came another strong home performance, a 3-0 dismissal of Jong AZ Alkmaar on 17 April, before they beat RKC Waalwijk away 1-0 on 5 May and held them to a 1-1 draw at home four days later. Then, just when the tie demanded it, they nicked the first leg in Almere 1-0. That’s a proper playoff run. No drama for drama’s sake. Just results.

The big picture is even better for Stegeman’s side. They’re unbeaten in eight, and that’s not the sort of streak you stumble into by luck. There’s a clear discipline to them right now. They’ve also been first to score in eight straight matches, which is huge in this sort of tie because it lets them dictate the shape of the game. Once Willem II get in front, they don’t seem to lose control. That matters here, because the best version of them is a team that can frustrate, then hurt you. Not flashy. Effective.

At home, the numbers are tidy enough to trust. Willem II have taken nine wins, six draws and four losses at their ground this season, scoring 32 and conceding 25. That’s a decent return, and it tells you they’re usually competitive in Tilburg even when they’re not spectacular. They don’t need to dominate possession for long spells either; they just need to stay sharp in key moments. The 3-0 win over Jong AZ and the 2-1 victory against Almere earlier in the spring both showed that if they land the first blow, they’re very capable of seeing things through. Still, they haven’t been watertight, and the 1-1 draw with RKC Waalwijk last time out was a reminder that they can be dragged into a scrap if they’re not clean in both boxes.

The tactical message is pretty straightforward. Willem II don’t have to throw the tie open. They’re in the better spot already. A compact, patient approach suits them, especially with the habit they’ve built of striking first. The home crowd will want control, not chaos. They should get both.

Almere City FC Form & Analysis

Almere City’s recent form has been a mix of life and frustration. They’ve had some good attacking days, no doubt about that. They beat FC Den Bosch 3-0 at home on 2 May and then won 3-1 against De Graafschap at home on 6 May, both solid performances in the playoff build-up. There was also that 3-2 away win over FC Den Bosch on 29 April, a proper open game with plenty of goals and a fair amount of nerve. But the cracks showed in the wrong places too. The 3-1 defeat at VVV-Venlo on 24 April wasn’t ideal, and the biggest one came in the first leg on 13 May, when they lost 1-0 at home to Willem II. That stung. It still does.

Jeroen Rijsdijk’s side are dangerous going forward, and that part of their identity is obvious. They’ve gone over 2.5 goals in nine of their last ten, and they’ve scored in eight of their last ten as well. So nobody should be expecting them to roll over quietly. They can create, they can open games up, and they don’t look short of confidence in the final third. The problem is the other side of the game. Almere have gone three matches without a clean sheet, and that’s the worry here. If they’re leaking chances and chasing the game, this playoff tie could start to feel heavy very quickly.

Their away record tells the same story. Almere have five wins, four draws and nine losses on the road this season, with 18 goals scored and 27 conceded. That’s not a disastrous away return, but it’s nowhere near the standard of a team that should feel comfortable going to Tilburg needing a result. They can score away from home, yes, but they concede too. Three goals at FC Den Bosch, one at VVV-Venlo, two at De Graafschap in a draw — it all points to openness, not control. Can they keep Willem II contained for long spells away from home? History says probably not.

That’s the key problem for Rijsdijk’s men. They can’t just rely on their attack to carry them because Willem II have already shown they know how to handle this matchup. Almere need a cleaner, more disciplined performance than the one they produced in the first leg. If they start chasing too early, they’ll leave space. And Willem II have been living off that kind of mistake.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has leaned Willem II’s way more often than not lately. They’ve won three of the last five meetings, including the two most recent ones, and both of those victories came by a single goal. That’s telling. Willem II have tended to do just enough rather than overwhelm Almere, but just enough is all they need again here.

There’s also a pattern worth keeping in mind: Almere have failed to keep a clean sheet in three straight meetings with Willem II, while Willem II have scored first in four of the last five head-to-heads. That combination is awkward for the visitors. It means they’ve often been forced to play catch-up, and that’s rarely where you want to be against a side that’s comfortable protecting a lead.

We Predict: Double Chance 1X

We’re backing Double Chance 1X at 2/5 for this one. Willem II are the steadier side, they’ve got the first-leg advantage, and they’ve gone eight games without a loss. That’s a serious platform in a knockout tie. They’ve also made a habit of scoring first, which is exactly the sort of edge that helps a home side protect a result rather than chase one.

Almere can score, and that’s why a straight home win feels a touch too tight for comfort. Still, the 1X angle covers the most likely shape of the night. A 1-1 draw feels about right if Almere push and Willem II counter into the space that opens up. If you want a slightly bolder route, Willem II to score first is the kind of in-play angle that fits what these teams have been doing for weeks.
