1. FSV Mainz 05 — Last 6
FC Bayern München — Last 6

Mainz host Bayern Munich at the MEWA Arena on Saturday afternoon in the Bundesliga, and the contrast between the two sides could hardly be sharper. Mainz are sitting 10th with 34 points, still in the pack but not exactly breathing freely, while Bayern arrive top of the table on 79 points and with the title race effectively under their control. For Bayern, this is about maintaining the sort of ruthless momentum that has defined their season. For Mainz, it’s a chance to take a swing at the best team in the country and maybe nick something that would give their league campaign a bit more colour.

There’s a bit of cup-and-Europe fatigue in the background too. Mainz are still balancing Bundesliga work with a Conference League knockout run, while Bayern have just come through a draining run of heavyweight fixtures, including those Champions League ties with Real Madrid and the DFB Pokal trip to Bayer Leverkusen. That doesn’t dull the quality gap, but it does add a wrinkle. Can Mainz catch Bayern flat? That’s the only real route to an upset.

Urs Fischer’s side have also had to deal with some pretty wild swings in recent weeks. One minute they’re beating Hoffenheim and Frankfurt, the next they’re being put in their place by Strasbourg away in Europe. That kind of inconsistency is why Mainz are mid-table rather than pushing higher. Bayern, on the other hand, have barely given anyone a look in. Vincent Kompany’s team are unbeaten in 18 and have turned almost every match into a statement. The numbers are one thing. The feel of them is even more intimidating.

1. FSV Mainz 05 Form & Analysis

Mainz’s last six tell the story of a side that can compete, but can’t quite hold the line for long enough. They beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home on 22 March, then followed that with a 2-1 win away at Hoffenheim on 4 April. That was a proper little surge. They kept it going with a 2-0 home win over Strasbourg in the Conference League on 9 April, and for a moment it looked as if they’d found some rhythm.

Then it all wobbled. A 1-0 home defeat to Freiburg in the Bundesliga on 12 April was a frustrating reverse, especially on their own pitch, and the 4-0 loss in Strasbourg four days later was a rough reality check. They steadied a touch with a 1-1 draw away at Borussia Mönchengladbach on 19 April, salvaging a point through Nadiem Amiri’s late penalty after a VAR intervention, but even that felt more like damage limitation than a sign of full control. Three games without a win in the league and Europe now. Not disastrous. Not reassuring either.

At home, Mainz’s league record is underwhelming for a side trying to stay securely in the top half. They’ve won four, drawn five and lost six at the MEWA Arena, scoring 17 and conceding 18. That’s a fine margin, but it points to the bigger issue: they’re rarely getting away from teams on their own ground. The home goals tally is modest, and while they’ve been competitive, they haven’t had much margin for error. You can see the pattern. They’re hard enough to beat, but not strong enough to bully anyone.

There is one reason Mainz won’t roll over here. They’ve generally been capable of finding a goal, and the recent home win over Strasbourg plus the late leveller at Gladbach suggest they can still create moments. Still, the defensive ceiling is low. Against a Bayern attack that keeps piling up chances, that’s a concern. Mainz can hang around for spells. Holding out for 90 minutes? That’s another matter.

FC Bayern München Form & Analysis

Bayern are doing what Bayern usually do when they’re in full flow — winning matches, home or away, and making it look routine even when the fixture list is brutal. Their last six reads like a run through Europe’s toughest tests and some of the Bundesliga’s awkward away trips, yet every one of them ended in victory. They beat Freiburg 3-2 away on 4 April, then followed that with a 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the Champions League a few days later. A 5-0 thumping of St. Pauli away came next, then a chaotic but deserved 4-3 home win over Real Madrid, before they saw off Stuttgart 4-2 in the league and knocked Leverkusen out of the Pokal with a 2-0 away win on 22 April.

That’s not just form. That’s control. Even when Bayern concede, they usually make the opposition regret it. The attack has been relentless, the shot numbers are huge, and the confidence is obvious. Against Leverkusen, they produced 20 shots, 11 on target and eight big chances. You don’t need much more than that to understand the scale of the threat. Bayern are creating chances at a pace that most Bundesliga sides simply can’t live with.

Away from home, they’ve been flawless in the league. Twelve wins from twelve away matches, 49 goals scored and only 14 conceded. That’s absurd. It’s the sort of away record that removes all suspense before kick-off. They’re not just winning on the road, they’re doing it with force. The clean sheets haven’t come in droves, but the attack more than covers that. If there’s a weakness, it’s only that they can leave the door ajar for a goal or two. The problem for Mainz is that Bayern usually score far more than that.

The unbeaten run is now up to 18 matches, and that tells you everything about how hard they are to stop once they get rolling. There’s no hint of a slowdown here. Vincent Kompany’s side look sharp, direct and nasty in the final third. Mainz will need their best defensive performance of the season just to keep this respectable.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has produced some lively scorelines over the years, and Bayern usually have the upper hand. The most recent meeting ended 2-2 in Munich in December, though that was a rare occasion where Mainz forced their way into the game and refused to go away. Before that, Bayern had won 3-0 at home in April 2025, while Mainz had pulled off a 2-1 home win in December 2024. That was a nice night for them. Rare, but nice.

The bigger picture still leans heavily Bayern’s way. They won 8-1 in Munich in March 2024, 3-1 in Mainz in October 2023, and 4-0 in both a league and cup meeting earlier in the sequence. There’s been no shortage of goals in this fixture either. The last ten meetings have all gone over 2.5 goals, which is a pretty brutal trend if you’re hoping for a cagey afternoon. Mainz can nick one. Bayern usually end up landing the bigger blows.

We Predict: Away Win

We’re backing Bayern Munich to win at 4/6 here. It’s a short price, but it’s still the right side of the line. Their away record is perfect in the Bundesliga — 12 wins from 12 — and their overall run is still stretching on without defeat. Mainz have been decent in patches, yet their home record is ordinary and they’ve just gone three games without a league win. Against this Bayern side, ordinary doesn’t cut it.

The scoreline call is 1-2 to Bayern. That feels about right because Mainz should find at least one chance to land a punch, especially with Bayern not exactly built around spotless clean sheets. But Bayern’s attack is on another level, and their habit of scoring early or controlling first halves gives them a real edge. If you wanted a slightly safer angle, Bayern to win and over 1.5 goals would be the natural alternative.
