CD Nacional — Last 6
AVS - Futebol SAD — Last 6

CD Nacional host AVS - Futebol SAD on Saturday evening in Liga Portugal Betclic, and the table gives this one a very clear shape. Nacional sit 14th with 31 points and should still be looking over their shoulder, but they’ve done enough work lately to create some breathing room. AVS are in a far worse place: 18th, 14 points, just one league win all season, and the gap between them and safety is starting to look ugly.

For Tiago Margarido’s side, this is the sort of home game they simply have to control. A win would tighten their grip on mid-table security and keep the pressure off in the final weeks. João Henriques’ AVS, by contrast, are running out of road. They’ve drawn far too often to make a real escape charge, and with no away win all season, every trip feels like a mountain. That’s the blunt truth of it.

There’s also a bit of history behind this fixture. The teams drew 2-2 when they met in December, and Nacional have had the better of the rivalry more often than not. That won’t decide Saturday’s match on its own, but it does matter. AVS haven’t found a clean way through Nacional yet, and they’ll need one now.

CD Nacional Form & Analysis

Nacional come into this on the back of a tidy little lift in results. They beat FC Alverca 1-0 at home, then went to Tondela and came away with a 2-0 win, which was exactly the sort of away day a side in their position needs. Before that, there was a more sobering spell: a 2-0 loss at Benfica, a 2-0 home win over CF Estrela Amadora, and defeats to Famalicão and Estoril Praia. The pattern is pretty clear. When Nacional get on the front foot, they’re hard enough to live with. When they fall behind early, they can look limited.

At home, the record is decent rather than dazzling: five wins, two draws and eight defeats, with 20 scored and 21 conceded. That’s not the kind of home profile that terrifies visitors. Still, the recent wins over Alverca and Estrela showed a team capable of handling games on their own terms, especially against opponents they expect to compete with. There’s a practical edge to Nacional when they’re not chasing the contest. They don’t need much to get a foothold. One goal often changes everything.

The other big thing here is their defensive shape at home. Twenty-one conceded in 15 home league matches is hardly perfect, but it’s much healthier than AVS’s road numbers. Nacional have also been involved in tight scorelines for a while — seven straight matches have stayed under 2.5 goals, which tells you they’re rarely in wild, open games. That can be a blessing or a curse. Against AVS, it probably suits them. If this turns scrappy, Nacional should like their chances more than their opponents do.

AVS - Futebol SAD Form & Analysis

AVS are still waiting for a proper breakthrough, and the recent run has been all about near misses rather than momentum. They held Sporting CP to a 1-1 draw at home last weekend, which was a strong result on paper, but it came after another pair of draws — 2-2 at Rio Ave and 1-1 against Vitória SC. Those are respectable enough scores, yet they don’t solve the bigger problem. Before that, they were beaten 3-0 at Gil Vicente, held 0-0 by Tondela and lost 1-0 to Santa Clara. Nine league games without a win is a bleak stretch. No way around it.

What’s more, AVS have been forced into a season of damage limitation, especially away from home. Their away record reads 0 wins, 5 draws and 10 defeats, with 10 goals scored and 39 conceded. That’s not a typo. Ten conceded in 15 away games would be hard enough; 39 is where the alarm bells start ringing. They’ve kept things a bit more respectable in recent weeks, with draws at Rio Ave and Tondela, but the underlying issue hasn’t gone away. They don’t travel well, they don’t finish games well, and they don’t protect leads because they rarely have them.

There is a small caveat. AVS have at least shown some stubbornness lately, and the Sporting draw will have given them a bit of belief. They’ve now gone three games unbeaten, all of them draws, which tells you they’re not folding completely. But that’s the problem too. Three draws don’t change the picture when a win has been missing since February. They need a result that actually moves the needle. This looks like a very awkward place to find one.

Head-to-Head

Nacional have had the better of this matchup over the past few meetings. They beat AVS 3-1 in January 2025, won 2-1 at home in April 2024 and also took a 1-0 away win back in November 2023. The more recent meetings have been tighter, with a 1-1 draw in August 2024 and a 2-2 draw in December 2025, but even those games backed up the same basic idea: Nacional usually find a way to land a punch.

That December draw matters here because it showed AVS can live in the game if they keep it compact. Even so, Nacional have now gone five straight head-to-head matches without losing. That kind of edge can seep into a fixture. It won’t score a goal for them, but it does sharpen the sense that AVS are the side under pressure to break a pattern.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We’re backing Both Teams To Score at 4/5 for this one, and that looks the strongest angle on the board. If you want to dig a bit deeper here, the midweek football predictions page pulls together midweek football predictions if you want a wider read across the midweek card. Nacional’s home games aren’t normally wild, but they’ve conceded in plenty of this season’s league fixtures, while AVS have at least managed to score in three straight draws against Sporting, Rio Ave and Vitória SC. The visitors may be bottom-end ugly, but they’re not dead in attack.

The 2-1 scoreline feels right. Nacional have the cleaner overall shape, the better home record and the more reliable route to three points, yet AVS have enough recent fight to nick something on the board. A 1-0 home win wouldn’t shock anyone, but the better call is that both sides get on the scoresheet before Nacional’s superior balance tells late on. If you want a smaller side bet, Nacional to win and under 3.5 goals is a decent alternative. This shouldn’t explode into a goal fest.
