Drogheda United — Last 6
Derry City — Last 6

Drogheda United host Derry City at Sullivan & Lambe Park on Friday evening, 8 May 2026, with both sides trying to keep pace in a tight Premier Division table. Drogheda sit 8th on 16 points, while Derry are a little higher in 5th on 19. That gap isn’t huge, but it matters. A home win would give Kevin Doherty’s side real breathing room; for Tiernan Lynch’s team, it’s a chance to stay in touch with the chasing pack and strengthen their push for the upper half.

There’s a bit of tension in the air around both clubs, too. Drogheda have been wildly inconsistent, capable of scoring three away at Shelbourne one week and then being put to the sword by Shamrock Rovers the next. Derry, by contrast, have been hard to beat for a while, but they’ve drawn too many games to turn control into separation. One side is trying to settle down. The other is trying to finish teams off. That’s the difference here.

The early-season meeting between these two ended 2-2 in Derry, and that feels relevant. Neither side has shown enough defensive certainty to promise a clean, tidy evening. Both have reasons to believe they can hurt the other. Both also have flaws that keep the door open.

Drogheda United Form & Analysis

Drogheda’s recent form reads like a team living on a knife-edge. They opened this little run with a goalless draw at home to Bohemian FC, then lost 3-2 at home to Galway United after a game that got away from them. A home defeat to St. Patrick’s Athletic followed, and that was another reminder that when Drogheda lose control, the goals can come quickly against them. Still, they’ve had a couple of bright moments in between. The 4-3 win away at Shelbourne was a proper slugfest, the sort of result that tells you they can score when the game opens up. Then came the 1-0 home win over Sligo Rovers, a much more practical performance, before Monday’s 4-1 defeat away to Shamrock Rovers.

That last result was rough, and not just because of the scoreline. Drogheda were second best for long spells, with Shamrock piling up 12 shots and 10 on target. Four goals conceded in one trip to Tallaght will sting. It will also sharpen the sense that Kevin Doherty’s side can’t afford to drift early here. They’ve now lost their last match, but the bigger pattern is simpler: they’re never far away from a goal, and never far away from a concession either.

At home, the numbers are middling rather than disastrous. Drogheda have picked up 8 points from 7 home league games, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats. They’ve scored 7 and conceded 8 at their own ground, which is hardly the profile of a team likely to dominate anyone. But it does show they’re usually competitive in front of their own crowd. They’re not getting blown away at home. They’re just not doing enough to turn tight matches into wins.

That’s the key point with Drogheda. They’re awkward, competitive and capable of scoring, but the defensive side keeps letting them down. They’ve scored 18 league goals overall, which isn’t bad for a side sitting 8th, yet they’ve also shipped 24. That’s a gap which tends to pull teams backwards over time. You can see why a draw wouldn’t surprise anyone here. You can also see why they won’t fear Derry.

Derry City Form & Analysis

Derry arrive with a very different mood, even if the recent results list is full of draws. Their last six league matches tell a story of control without total reward. They drew 0-0 away at Sligo Rovers, then came away from Dundalk with a 2-2 draw after a lively evening. A 1-2 win at Shelbourne was a stronger statement, particularly away from home, and they followed that with a 1-0 home win over Shamrock Rovers, which is the sort of result that carries weight in this league. Since then, it’s been two more draws: 1-1 away at Bohemian FC and 1-1 at home to Galway United on Monday.

That’s six matches unbeaten. Not flashy. Still useful. Derry haven’t lost since 3 April, and that gives them a base to lean on. The frustration is obvious, though. They’ve drawn seven league games already, which is a lot for a team sitting 5th and trying to climb. The problem isn’t that they’re soft. It’s that they often leave points on the table after getting themselves into decent positions.

Away from home, Derry’s record is respectable without being dominant. One win, four draws and two defeats from seven away league games, with 6 goals scored and 7 conceded. They’re steady rather than ruthless. You don’t go to Derry expecting fireworks, and you probably don’t go to them expecting to be overrun either. They’re organised enough to stay in games, but not sharp enough on the road to turn that into a procession of wins.

Their last outing summed them up neatly. Against Galway, they had the better of the chance count and did plenty of the pressing, with 19 shots to 7 and 7 on target to 2, yet they still needed a late Kévin Santos goal to salvage a point after James Clarke’s own goal had put them behind. That’s Derry in a nutshell right now. Good enough to keep pushing. Not quite clean enough to make life easy. Mind you, that’s still a more stable place to be than Drogheda’s.

Head-to-Head

These two have been tight for a while. The recent meetings have produced plenty of goals and very little separation, which is why Friday’s game feels so open despite the league positions. The most recent clash finished 2-2 in Derry on 20 March 2026, and before that Drogheda drew 1-1 at home to Derry in September 2025. There was also a 1-4 Drogheda win in the FAI Cup in August 2025, a reminder that they can hurt each other when the match turns chaotic.

The broader pattern is clear enough. Drogheda haven’t lost any of the last three meetings, and both teams have scored in five of the last six. That’s not a fluke. These games tend to produce chances at both ends, and neither back line has looked fully comfortable dealing with the other. So if you’re looking for a clean, controlled affair, you’re probably on the wrong fixture.

We Predict: Double Chance 1X

Double Chance 1X at 8/13 looks the strongest play here. Our football tips hub is a useful companion here because it pulls together our main football tips hub with singles, goals picks and combo angles in one place. Drogheda are not a polished side, but they’ve been awkward enough at home to make life hard for anyone, and Derry’s away record is built on draws more than wins. That’s the heart of it. The visitors are unbeaten in six, yet four of those were draws on the road, and they’ve only won once away all season. That doesn’t scream reliability.

The 1-1 correct score fits the shape of the match. Drogheda have enough attacking punch to get on the board, especially with their recent habit of finding goals even in defeat, while Derry are steady enough to respond. A draw wouldn’t surprise anyone. Still, with Drogheda’s home resilience and Derry’s lack of bite away from home, backing the hosts to avoid defeat feels like the safer call. If you want a slightly bigger-price angle, both teams to score has obvious appeal given the recent head-to-head pattern, but 1X is the cleaner bet.
