Dundalk FC — Last 6
Shamrock Rovers — Last 6

Dundalk host Shamrock Rovers at Oriel Park on Friday evening in the Premier Division, and the table gives this one real weight. Dundalk sit fourth on 22 points, trying to keep their season moving in the right direction and stay attached to the race near the top end. Shamrock Rovers arrive as leaders on 34 points, already the team everyone else is chasing, and another clean result here would tighten their grip at the summit.

It’s the sort of fixture that tends to tell you plenty about both sides. Dundalk need a response after slipping into a winless patch, while Shamrock Rovers are trying to keep the pressure on without letting standards drop. There’s also a familiar edge to it. These two have played tight, awkward games in recent seasons, and when Dundalk and Rovers meet, the margins are usually slim. That won’t change here.

Dundalk FC Form & Analysis

Dundalk’s recent run has been messy, and the story of it is pretty clear. They were beaten 3-1 at home by Bohemian FC on 8 May, a game that got away from them after Robert Cornwall was sent off and Bohemians took control. Before that, they’d rescued a point in a 3-3 draw away to Waterford FC, which at least showed some bite, but it also exposed how fragile they can be when the game opens up. A 2-1 home loss to Shelbourne on 1 May followed, and that was the sort of defeat that hurts more because it came at Oriel Park, where they’ve generally been stronger.

Go back a little further and you find the same pattern with different opponents. Dundalk lost 2-0 away to Sligo Rovers, though that scoreline was awkwardly listed as a loss in the record despite the result line, and they did beat Galway United 2-1 at home on 17 April. The point from Derry City in a 2-2 draw before that was useful, but it feels like a while ago now. Four games without a win is the headline, and it’s not the kind you want before a visit from the league leaders. Their scoring has usually been there — 27 league goals is a healthy return — but the balance has tilted the wrong way because they’ve kept giving chances away at the other end. Seven league matches without a clean sheet tells its own story. Not pretty.

At home, though, Dundalk have at least been respectable. Their ground record reads four wins, two draws and two defeats, with 15 scored and nine conceded. That’s a decent platform. They’ve done enough at Oriel Park to suggest they can compete with anyone on their day, and they’ve scored in most of those games. The problem is that “on their day” has been doing a lot of work lately. If they’re to threaten Shamrock Rovers, they’ll need to be sharper in both boxes. You can’t keep gifting big moments to a side with Rovers’ control and expect to come away happy.

Shamrock Rovers Form & Analysis

Shamrock Rovers come in looking like the league’s benchmark side, even if their last six have had the occasional wobble. The 3-1 win at Galway United on 8 May was a strong response after a 1-0 home win over Waterford FC and a 4-1 demolition of Drogheda United at home. That’s three wins in a row now, and the latest one away from home had a bit of everything: an early goal from Michael Noonan, another from Adam Brennan, and then second-half finishes from Matthew Wolfe and Tunmise Sobowale. When Rovers get on top, they don’t tend to let go.

The one setback in that stretch was the 1-0 defeat away to Derry City on 24 April. Before and after it, though, they’ve handled business. They beat St. Patrick’s Athletic 1-0 away, beat Bohemian FC 2-1 at home, and have generally looked like a side that knows exactly how to manage matches. That’s the biggest difference between them and Dundalk right now. Rovers don’t need to be spectacular every week. They just know when to squeeze a game, when to open it up, and when to kill it off. Sixteen league matches have brought 10 wins, four draws and only two defeats. That’s top-of-the-table form, no doubt about it.

Their away record is solid rather than dazzling, but it’s still good enough to travel with confidence. Three wins, three draws and two defeats, with 11 scored and eight conceded, gives them a reliable base on the road. They’ve not been leaking goals away from home either, and that matters here because Dundalk’s home games often have enough threat in them to punish loose defending. Still, Rovers have the stronger shape, the better defensive numbers overall, and the sort of consistency that makes them hard to go against. They’ve scored 27 league goals, same as Dundalk, but their 13 conceded is what really stands out. That’s a proper title-chasing profile.

Head-to-Head

These two have been closely matched in recent meetings, and the recent scorelines show that no one gets this one for free. The sides drew 1-1 at Shamrock Rovers in February 2026, which fits the broader pattern of tight, tense games rather than end-to-end chaos. Before that, Rovers edged Dundalk 1-0 at Oriel Park in October 2024, and they also won 1-0 at home in July that year. Dundalk, for their part, have had their moments too, including a 1-0 home win in May 2024 and a 1-0 win in the FAI Cup in July 2023.

The bigger trend is the low-scoring nature of the fixture. Nine of the last ten meetings have stayed under 2.5 goals, and that’s hard to ignore. These games usually get tight quickly, with neither side giving much away. One goal often changes everything. Sometimes that’s enough.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We’re backing Both Teams To Score at 4/6 here, and it feels like the right call for this Friday night fixture. Dundalk have scored in enough of their home games to be respected, while Shamrock Rovers have the league’s best overall record and have found the net in each of their last three wins. The xG projection — 1.5 for Dundalk and 1.3 for Rovers — points to a game where both sides get chances, not a shutout. That 1-1 correct score looks the cleanest angle.

There’s a little tension with the head-to-head, because these meetings have often been cagey and low-scoring. Fair enough. But Dundalk’s home scoring habit and Rovers’ away threat make a one-way game less likely than the market might suggest. If you want a slightly more conservative angle, Shamrock Rovers in the double chance market would be worth a look, but BTTS is the sharper play. One goal each feels right.
