FC Arouca — Last 6
Tondela — Last 6

FC Arouca host Tondela on 16 May 2026 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, with both sides arriving at this late-season meeting carrying very different burdens. Arouca sit 10th on 39 points, comfortably clear of the real scrap below them, while Tondela are down in 17th on 28 points and still dragging around the weight of a poor campaign. That gap matters. Arouca are playing for a decent finish and a bit of momentum; Tondela are fighting for every scrap of safety they can still get.

There’s also a recent edge to this fixture. Tondela beat Arouca 3-1 in the reverse league meeting on 3 January, and that result will still sit in the background here. But league position tells its own story. Arouca have been the steadier side over the season, and at home they’ve done enough to make this a tricky afternoon for anyone. Tondela, for their part, have shown some fight in recent weeks, yet their away numbers are still far too fragile to trust.

The mood in both camps is better than it was a fortnight ago. Arouca snapped back with a 3-1 win away at Gil Vicente on 11 May, while Tondela followed their own home victory over Moreirense by beating Casa Pia away and drawing with Sporting CP before that. So neither side arrives on the back of a collapse. Still, the bigger body of work leans one way. Arouca have more goals in them, more structure at home and more reason to control the game. Tondela need something nearly perfect to take all three points. That won’t be easy.

FC Arouca Form & Analysis

Arouca’s recent run has had a bit of everything, which is pretty much why they’ve ended up in mid-table rather than pushing higher. They opened this spell with a strong home win over Estoril Praia, taking a 3-2 result that had just enough chaos to suit them. Then came a narrow 1-0 home victory over CF Estrela Amadora, a cleaner, more disciplined performance. After that, they ran into trouble at Sporting Braga and lost 1-0 away, which isn’t exactly a shock, but it did remind everyone that goals don’t always come easily against better organised sides.

The wobble continued at FC Alverca, where Arouca lost 2-1, before they responded well with that 3-1 win at Gil Vicente. It was a useful answer after a mixed few weeks. They weren’t spectacular, but they were efficient and, for once, ruthless enough when chances came along. The 2-2 draw with Santa Clara at home in between those results adds to the picture: Arouca are hard to pin down, capable of scoring twice, but not always sharp enough to shut a game down. Three of those six league matches produced at least three goals. That’s no accident.

At home this season, Arouca’s record is respectable rather than dominant: six wins, four draws and six defeats, with 24 scored and 29 conceded. That’s a pretty open profile for a side in 10th. They’ll score at this ground, but they’ll also give you openings if you keep showing up. The defensive figure is the awkward bit. Conceding 29 in 16 home league games is too generous for a team that wants to control proceedings. Mind you, they’ve only lost one of their last three at home and they’re usually good for a goal or two. That keeps them in plenty of matches.

There’s another thing working for them here: they’ve been the first side to score in five of the last six meetings with Tondela, and they’ll fancy doing that again on Saturday evening. Vasco Seabra’s side don’t look like a team built to blitz opponents from start to finish, but they do have enough attacking variety to ask questions early. The problem is what comes after. If they let the game drift, Tondela will sense it.

Tondela Form & Analysis

Tondela have at least shown some late-season pulse. Their most recent home win over Moreirense was tidy and controlled, a 2-0 success built on a strong first half and a clean defensive effort. Before that, they went to Casa Pia and won 1-0 away, which is exactly the sort of result a struggling side needs when the pressure is on. That was followed by a credible 2-2 draw at Sporting CP, and that result carries real weight. You don’t go to a heavyweight like Sporting and come away with a point by accident.

The flip side? The earlier part of this run is why they’re still staring at danger. They lost 2-0 at FC Porto, were beaten 2-0 at home by CD Nacional, and drew 2-2 with Gil Vicente. That’s a mixed bag, but the losses to Porto and Nacional exposed the same old issue. Too many goals against, too little margin for error. Tondela can compete, but they often need the game to suit them. If they’re chasing, they can get stretched fast.

Away from home, their record isn’t hopeless, but it’s still not the record of a side you’d trust under pressure: four wins, three draws and nine defeats, with 13 goals scored and 31 conceded. Those numbers are blunt. They don’t travel well, and they certainly don’t travel safely. Scoring only 13 away league goals tells you plenty. They’ve been competitive in spells, but they don’t carry enough threat on the road to force opponents deep for long periods. That’s a real issue against an Arouca side that usually finds a way to score at home.

Gonçalo Feio will be pleased that Tondela have at least stopped looking like easy prey. The win over Moreirense was backed up by a disciplined performance at Casa Pia, and even the draw at Sporting suggests there’s some resilience in this group. Still, they’ve conceded 52 goals across the league season, and 31 of those have come away. That’s too much traffic through the back door. They can nick a result if the game becomes scrappy. In a more open contest, they’re vulnerable.

Head-to-Head

The recent history between these two sides gives Tondela a little more confidence than their league position would normally allow. They won the reverse fixture 3-1 in January, and that result followed a 2-0 friendly victory in July 2025. Go back further and the picture becomes more balanced, with a 2-2 draw in March 2022 and Arouca winning 2-0 at home in October 2021.

There’s no long-running dominance either way, but Tondela have had the upper hand in the last two meetings. That said, Arouca have usually found a way onto the scoresheet in this fixture, and the broader pattern isn’t one of complete control. It’s a matchup that tends to stay alive for longer than you’d expect.

We Predict: Double Chance 1X

We’re backing Double Chance 1X at 4/6 here. Arouca aren’t flawless, but they’re the more reliable side at this level and their home record is stronger than Tondela’s away numbers. The hosts have scored 24 at home, they’ve only lost six times there all season, and they’ve been first to score in five of the last six meetings. That’s a decent base to work from.

Tondela’s recent resilience is the main reason this isn’t a heavier home call. They’ve picked up points at Sporting and Casa Pia, and the 3-1 reverse fixture win gives them a live chance of making life awkward again. But over 90 minutes, Arouca look likelier to avoid defeat than Tondela look to land a clean away win. A 1-1 draw feels about right, with Arouca’s home edge and Tondela’s decent recent resistance cancelling each other out.

If you want a slightly bolder angle, both teams to score has a case too. Arouca have been vulnerable at home, and Tondela have enough momentum to nick one. Still, the safer play is the double chance.
