FC Twente — Last 6
NEC Nijmegen — Last 6

FC Twente host NEC Nijmegen on Saturday evening in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, and this is one of those late-season games that can still twist the table. Twente sit fourth on 53 points, one behind NEC in third, so there’s real weight here for both clubs. European qualification is in the frame, the podium places are still up for grabs, and nobody wants to hand a direct rival a clean run at the Champions League spots.

John van den Brom’s side have spent the spring doing enough to stay right in the hunt, while Dick Schreuder’s NEC have been one of the livelier attacking sides in the division. Twente have the better defensive numbers overall, but NEC arrive with more goals in their locker and one of the stronger away records in the league. That’s the tension in the game. Can Twente’s control at home blunt NEC’s attacking punch? Or do we get another open, high-scoring meeting between two teams who don’t seem to know how to sit on a lead?

The recent meetings lean that way. When these clubs met in Nijmegen in October, it finished 3-3. Before that, Twente beat NEC 3-2 at home in May, and this fixture has regularly produced goals. You’d expect this one to have a bit of bite too, with the table so tight and both sides knowing a win changes everything.

FC Twente Form & Analysis

Twente have come into this game with a bit of momentum after shaking off their last defeat. Their most recent league outing brought a 2-1 home win over FC Volendam on 10 April, and it was the sort of performance that fits their season neatly: plenty of pressure, enough quality in the final third, and just enough vulnerability to keep things interesting. They had already gone to Ajax on 4 April and won 2-1, then followed that with a 2-1 away success at Fortuna Sittard on 21 March. Before the bump against FC Utrecht, that was a proper three-game winning run, and even the 0-2 home loss to Utrecht on 15 March hasn’t derailed them for long.

The broader picture is solid. Twente’s home record reads eight wins, four draws and three defeats, with 24 goals scored and 15 conceded at De Grolsch Veste. That’s not the record of a side that rolls teams over every week, but it is the record of a team that usually gets its job done. They’ve scored in bunches at times and, just as importantly for this one, they’ve generally protected their own box well enough to stay in games. Their overall league record of 51 goals scored and only 32 conceded is tidy. Not flashy. Efficient.

There are a couple of clear edges in their favour here. Twente have been strong in the big moments at home, and their recent xG numbers back up the idea that they’re creating proper chances rather than just living off moments. Against Volendam, they posted 2.20 xG, fired 23 shots and forced six big chances. That wasn’t a scrape. It was a clear territorial win. The concern, if you’re looking for one, is that they don’t always keep clean sheets. They’ve now gone five straight without one in league play, which matters against a NEC side that travel well and score freely. That won’t go unnoticed.

Still, Twente look like a team that know how to win this sort of game. They’ve beaten Feyenoord 2-0, gone to Go Ahead Eagles and won 4-1, and taken points in tough away fixtures. At home, they’re usually competent rather than spectacular. That’s often enough. Especially when the opponent wants to play on the front foot too.

NEC Nijmegen Form & Analysis

NEC’s recent league form is a little patchier, but the attacking numbers keep them right in the mix. They drew 1-1 with Feyenoord at home on 12 April, which is no small result, and before that they won 2-0 away at Excelsior on 4 April. Their 2-2 draw with SC Heerenveen on 22 March was another reminder that they rarely have quiet afternoons, and they followed that with a 3-2 win at PSV Eindhoven on 14 March. Throw in the 3-0 home win over FC Volendam on 8 March and you’ve got a side that can hurt anyone, anywhere. The trouble came in the cup last time out, when AZ hammered them 5-1 away on 19 April. That was a rough night. No way around it.

Away from home, though, NEC have been excellent over the league season. Their record on the road is seven wins, five draws and three defeats, with 34 goals scored and 25 conceded. That’s second-best away form in the division, and it tells you they’re not the sort to sit back and hope for scraps. They carry a threat. A proper one. Dick Schreuder’s side have scored 72 league goals overall, the best attacking return of the two clubs and a huge reason they’re sat in third place despite having conceded 48. That defensive figure is the trade-off. They’ll entertain you, then make you sweat at the other end.

The cup defeat at AZ was ugly, but I wouldn’t read too much into it for this league trip. The xG split there was 2.56 against them and only 1.07 in their favour, so they were opened up badly. Against league opposition, they’ve been much harder to pin down. The away form is the bigger clue. They’ve scored in plenty of those trips and they’ve been involved in a string of games that have gone over. They’ve also found the net in eight of their last ten league matches, which is exactly why this fixture looks so live for goals.

Mind you, NEC’s style can leave them exposed. They’ve conceded 48 in the league, which is too many for a side sitting third. That’s the flip side of their ambition. They’ll come to Enschede looking to play, not to survive. Fine by Twente. That should open the door to chances at both ends.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has had a habit of producing noise. The last meeting, in Nijmegen on 18 October 2025, finished 3-3. Before that, Twente edged NEC 3-2 at home in May 2025, and they also won 2-0 in Enschede in February 2025. Go back a little further and you’ll find more of the same: Twente won 2-1 away in August 2024, while NEC’s 1-0 home win in January 2024 stands out as one of the few tighter encounters in this stretch.

The pattern is plain enough. Twente have gone four straight head-to-head meetings without losing, and NEC haven’t kept a clean sheet in four against them. More than 2.5 goals has landed in five of the last seven meetings too. So yes, these two usually bring drama. This one shouldn’t be any different.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 4/9 for this one. It’s short for a reason. Twente’s home matches rarely look sterile, NEC’s away games are built around attack, and both sides have been involved in plenty of high-scoring league fixtures this season. Twente have also hit four of their last five for over 2.5 goals, while NEC have seen six of their last eight league games go the same way. That’s a pretty strong collision of trends.

The scoreline call is 2-1 to FC Twente. Twente’s home edge and slightly cleaner defensive record give them the nod, but NEC have enough about them to get on the board. If you want a small alternative, both teams to score is live as well. It’s not as clean a play as the goal line, though. Over 2.5 looks the sharper angle here, and this has the feel of a game that gets open after the first goal.
