FK Csíkszereda Miercurea Ciuc — Last 6
FC Botoșani — Last 6

FK Csíkszereda Miercurea Ciuc host FC Botoșani in the SuperLiga relegation round on Saturday evening, 16 May 2026, with both sides still chasing a cleaner finish to the season. For Csíkszereda, this is about putting a bit more daylight between themselves and the danger zone after a campaign that’s had plenty of strain in it. Botoșani, sitting a little more comfortably in 9th place, are looking to keep momentum going and avoid letting a solid late-season spell drift away.

There’s a bit more pressure on the home side, even if they’ve shown enough at their own ground to make this a live contest. Csíkszereda are 13th on 32 points, with a record of eight wins, eight draws and 14 defeats, and their defensive numbers have been a problem all season. Botoșani are 9th on 42 points and, while they haven’t exactly been free-scoring, they’ve been far more secure at the back. That gap matters. So does the fact this is the relegation round, where every point carries extra weight and every mistake feels bigger than it should.

The journey to this point has been built on very different moods. Csíkszereda have had to scrap for everything, while Botoșani have found a little more rhythm in the run-in. Still, this isn’t a mismatch. The home side have enough stubbornness, and Botoșani have had enough draws on the board, to suggest a tight, tense evening rather than a clear-cut away stroll.

FK Csíkszereda Miercurea Ciuc Form & Analysis

Csíkszereda’s recent run has been a mixed bag, but there’s a clearer pattern if you look at it as a story. They came through a 1-0 home win over FCSB on 1 May, a result that stands out as one of their best of the spring. Before that, they had been held 0-0 away at FC Hermannstadt and edged AFC Unirea 04 Slobozia 3-2 at home, a chaotic game they still did enough to win. That was the good spell. Then the wheels slipped again with a 1-0 defeat at UTA Arad on 8 May, a match where they barely laid a glove on the opposition and finished with no shots on target. That won’t fill anyone with confidence.

Their season-long home record is the main reason they’re not in a worse spot. Six wins, six draws and only three defeats at this ground is a respectable return, and they’ve scored 20 times while conceding 18 in front of their own support. That’s not dominant, but it’s competitive. The numbers tell you they’re usually in games at home, which is more than can be said for some sides around them. The problem is consistency. When the attack clicks, like it did against Slobozia or FCSB, they can hurt teams. When it doesn’t, they can look flat very quickly. Three home draws as well as the six wins underline that they tend to keep things close rather than run away with matches.

Defensively, Csíkszereda are far from secure. Their overall league record of 30 goals scored and 58 conceded is a blunt warning sign. At home they’ve been better, but the back line still gives opponents chances, and their 1.26 xGA in the defeat at UTA Arad reflected that vulnerability. Mind you, they’ve also been awkward to beat at this venue. That’s the twist with this team. They’re not polished. They’re not safe. Yet they’ve got enough bite at home to drag opponents into a scrap, and that can make them tricky to put away.

FC Botoșani Form & Analysis

Botoșani arrive in better shape on paper, but their recent results haven’t been all smooth either. They drew 1-1 with Petrolul Ploiești at home on 10 May, and that followed back-to-back 1-1s away to Farul Constanța and at home to Oțelul Galați. Before that, they beat Metaloglobus București 3-2 in a more open, messy game and had already shown they can punch above their weight by beating FCSB 3-2 at home on 3 April. The only real blot in that run was the 3-1 loss at UTA Arad. So yes, they’ve been hard to beat, but they haven’t exactly been shutting teams out or cruising.

The away record is where the caution creeps in. Four wins, four draws and seven defeats on the road, with 13 scored and 17 conceded, is fine but not imposing. They’re the sort of away side that keeps enough structure to stay alive, yet still leaves the door open. That’s been obvious in the results. Farul away finished 1-1. UTA away was a loss. And even when they’ve looked dangerous, the games have tended to remain open for long stretches. Can they control this one? That’s the real question. Away from home, they haven’t been convincing enough to be trusted blindly.

The last match against Petrolul was actually a good example of what Botoșani can be. They posted 2.29 xG, had 20 shots, put six on target and carved out five big chances. That should have won them the game. It didn’t. They were wasteful, and the draw was a reminder that attacking volume doesn’t always translate into three points. Still, the level of chance creation is hard to ignore. Botoșani do get into dangerous areas. They don’t often kill games off. That lack of a ruthless edge is why they keep landing in these awkward, tight scorelines rather than pulling away from opponents.

Head-to-Head

These two have already met twice in the recent record, and the balance is split. Csíkszereda won the most recent meeting 1-0 at home on 18 January 2026, while Botoșani had beaten them 3-1 at home on 23 August 2025. That’s a neat enough summary of where the rivalry sits right now: each side has found a way through once, and neither has truly taken control.

The home edge has mattered in both games. That’s a useful clue for Saturday evening. Csíkszereda will fancy their chances of making this awkward again, but Botoșani’s stronger overall league position and more reliable defensive base give the away side a little more to work with than that H2H split alone might suggest.

We Predict: Double Chance X2

We’re backing Double Chance X2 at 2/5 for this one. Botoșani aren’t perfect on the road, but they’ve been steadier than Csíkszereda across the season and they come in with a better points tally, a far tighter defensive record, and a run of four unbeaten matches since their last defeat. That’s enough to make the away side look the safer call in a match that should stay compact.

The projected 1-1 scoreline fits the shape of the game. Csíkszereda are awkward at home and have already beaten Botoșani here this season, so an away win isn’t something you’d treat as a banker. But Botoșani’s ability to create chances, plus Csíkszereda’s habit of conceding, points toward the visitors avoiding defeat at the very least. If you want a slightly bolder angle, both teams to score also has some appeal, but X2 is the cleaner, safer position.
