Fortuna Düsseldorf — Last 6
SG Dynamo Dresden — Last 6

Fortuna Düsseldorf host SG Dynamo Dresden at the Merkur Spiel-Arena on Friday evening in the 2. Bundesliga, and both sides arrive with plenty still hanging in the balance. Düsseldorf are 17th on 31 points and staring at a grim end to the campaign unless they can drag themselves away from trouble fast. Dresden sit 11th on 35 points, not quite safe from everything but comfortably better placed, and they’d love to keep building a little distance between themselves and the lower half.

There’s a different kind of pressure on each bench too. Alexander Ende’s Düsseldorf need points, simple as that, because their season has become a long slog of frustration and damaged confidence. Thomas Stamm’s Dresden, on the other hand, have the chance to keep their momentum going and finish strongly. That’s the real prize here. One side is fighting to stop the slide; the other is trying to make sure a decent season doesn’t get messy at the finish.

The recent head-to-head gives the visitors a lift as well. Dresden beat Düsseldorf 2-1 in the reverse league meeting on 30 November 2025, and they’ve had the upper hand in this fixture more often than not over the years. That won’t decide Friday’s game on its own. But it does add a bit of edge to a match where the home team badly need a clean response and the away team have every reason to believe they can score again.

Fortuna Düsseldorf Form & Analysis

Düsseldorf’s form has been ugly. There’s no gentler way to put it. Their last six league matches have brought five defeats and only one win, and even that victory feels like ancient history now. They followed a narrow 1-0 success at 1. FC Nürnberg on 7 March with a terrible run: a 1-0 loss at Eintracht Braunschweig, then a 2-5 home collapse against Hertha BSC, then a 3-0 defeat at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The spell hasn’t let up since. Holstein Kiel came to town and left with a 2-1 win, before Düsseldorf were beaten 2-0 at 1. FC Magdeburg last time out.

That Magdeburg loss summed them up. They didn’t get overrun everywhere, but they still lost the key moments and, once again, failed to find the goals needed to recover. Their away xG of 0.98 was never enough to scare anyone, and they’re now five matches without a win. Confidence must be thin. That’s the problem when a team keeps losing in different ways — one game’s a defensive mess, the next it’s blunt in attack, and then the next it’s all of it at once.

At home, the picture isn’t much prettier. Düsseldorf’s record at the Merkur Spiel-Arena stands at 5 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats, with 16 goals scored and 24 conceded. That’s a bottom-half home record, full stop. They’ve managed to score in enough games to suggest there’s something there, but they’ve also been too easy to open up. Five home defeats already, and 24 shipped on their own ground, is the kind of number that tells visiting teams they only need to stay patient. Can Düsseldorf raise themselves in front of their own supporters? They’ll have to, because the alternative is another night of chasing shadows.

The broader issue is balance. Their overall record of 27 goals scored and 47 conceded says they’re not keeping pace in either penalty area. The numbers don’t point to a team that controls matches or protects leads. They’re the sort of side that can produce enough to get on the scoresheet, yet still leave the door open at the other end. That’s exactly the sort of profile that leans toward both teams finding a way through.

SG Dynamo Dresden Form & Analysis

Dresden arrive with a much brighter spring in their step. They were sharp in a 2-0 home win over VfL Bochum 1848 last weekend, a result built on a lively first half and enough composure to see it through. Before that, they went to 1. FC Nürnberg and won 2-0 away, which is the sort of result that travels well in any league. Yes, there was a 1-0 home defeat to Hertha BSC in between, and a 2-1 loss at SC Paderborn 07 before that, but the mood is still healthier than it is in Düsseldorf. Six games back, Dresden have three wins, one draw and two defeats. That’s solid enough.

What stands out is that they’re not just scraping through. When they beat Bochum, they created four big chances and posted a respectable 1.39 xG while restricting the visitors to 0.92. That wasn’t a smash-and-grab. The 6-0 thumping of Preußen Münster at home earlier in the run showed what they can do when things click, and even the 3-3 draw at Karlsruher SC on 8 March suggested they’re capable of turning games into open, end-to-end contests. They’ve got a bit of freedom about them. That can be dangerous, especially against a side as fragile as Düsseldorf.

Away from home, Dresden have been better than the league table might imply. Their away record is 4 wins, 5 draws and 6 defeats, with 22 goals scored and 26 conceded. That’s a respectable return, and it tells you they don’t disappear on the road. They’ve scored 22 times in away matches already, which is a healthy figure, and they’ve avoided turning every trip into a damage limitation exercise. Mind you, the defensive side isn’t airtight either. Twenty-six conceded away from home means they do give opponents a route into the game. That’s the opening Düsseldorf need.

There’s another angle worth flagging. Dresden have made a habit of striking first lately, and that suits them. When they get on the front foot, they look far more settled, far more dangerous. Their last outing was a clean, efficient performance. If they bring that same clarity to Friday evening, they’ll fancy their chances of landing another score and forcing Düsseldorf to chase.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has leaned Dresden’s way in the recent past. They won the reverse league meeting 2-1 in Dresden on 30 November 2025, and they also beat Fortuna 2-0 in the DFB-Pokal in August 2024. Go back a little further and the pattern stays awkward for Düsseldorf: Dresden won 1-0 at home in November 2021, drew 2-2 in Düsseldorf in April 2022, and took a 3-1 win in this ground in November 2017. Fortuna have had the odd response, including a 2-1 away win in April 2018, but they’ve rarely had things easy.

One trend really jumps off the page. Düsseldorf haven’t kept a clean sheet against Dresden in a long stretch of this rivalry. That matters here because their current defensive issues are already obvious. If you’ve been leaking goals all season, and the opposition’s recent meetings with you have been productive, that’s not a comfortable combination. Dresden know how to trouble them. Simple as that.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We’re backing Both Teams To Score at 4/7 here, and that price looks fair enough for a match with this shape. Düsseldorf have been conceding far too often, especially at home, while Dresden have enough going for them in attack to believe they’ll land at least one. The reverse meeting ended 2-1 to Dresden, and Friday’s xG projection of 1.4 to 1.3 points in the same direction. This shouldn’t be a clean, controlled contest.

A 1-1 draw feels the likeliest scoreline. Düsseldorf need something from the game and should find a way through at home, but their back line rarely gives you much confidence. Dresden, with their away record and sharper recent form, should score too. If you want a slightly punchier angle, Dresden to score first has plenty of appeal as well — they’ve done that regularly enough lately — but BTTS remains the strongest call.
