Hamburger SV — Last 6
SC Freiburg — Last 6

Hamburger SV welcome SC Freiburg to the Volksparkstadion on Sunday afternoon in the Bundesliga, with both sides still chasing a strong finish to the campaign but from slightly different angles. Hamburg sit 12th on 34 points, which gives them some breathing space, yet their defensive numbers have kept them closer to the pack than they’d like. Freiburg are 7th on 44 points and still in the hunt for the European places. That’s the bigger prize here. One is trying to stabilise after a patchy season; the other is trying to turn a decent league position into something that ends with continental football again.

There’s a bit of added texture, too. Julian Schuster’s Freiburg arrive on the back of a Europa League knockout-stage tie with Sporting Braga, so they’ve had midweek business to deal with and their week has been shaped by that effort. They beat Braga 3-1 at home on 7 May after losing 2-1 away in Portugal, which means they’ve had to spend energy in a tense European run while also keeping one eye on the league. Hamburger SV, under Merlin Polzin, have had a simpler schedule and will feel they’ve got no excuses about freshness. The question is whether that gives them an edge, or whether Freiburg’s sharper quality in the final third tells the story again.

Hamburger SV Form & Analysis

Hamburg’s recent league form has been messy, but not hopeless. They went to Eintracht Frankfurt on 2 May and came away with a 2-1 win, which was a proper lift after the frustration of a 1-2 home loss to Hoffenheim the week before. Before that, though, there was a tough spell: a 3-1 defeat at Werder Bremen, a heavy 4-0 loss at Stuttgart, and a home draw with Augsburg where they were held 1-1. Go back a little further and you find a 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. That’s a difficult run to dress up any other way. They’ve been competitive in flashes, but the points have gone missing too often.

Still, there are signs that Hamburg can make games awkward for opponents, especially at home. Their league record at the Volksparkstadion reads five wins, six draws and five defeats, with 22 goals scored and 20 conceded. That is not the profile of a side getting blown away in their own stadium. They’ve generally been good for a goal, sometimes two, and they haven’t been as porous there as they have been on the road. The problem is obvious, though: too many games drift into the kind of open, back-and-forth contest that leaves them exposed late on. They’ve now gone a long spell without a clean sheet, and if they’re conceding first, life quickly gets uncomfortable.

The positive for Hamburg is that they’ve shown some bite going forward and their home matches have had a slightly more balanced shape than their wider season suggests. The 1-2 loss to Hoffenheim and the 1-1 draw with Augsburg both underline the same theme — they can stay in games, but they rarely control them for long enough. That makes them awkward, not reliable. Still, if Freiburg start slowly after Europe, Hamburg will fancy nicking the first goal. They’ve got enough home scoring habit to do that.

SC Freiburg Form & Analysis

Freiburg’s last few weeks have had a proper split personality. In the Bundesliga, they were held 1-1 at home by Wolfsburg on 3 May, which followed a 4-0 hammering at Borussia Dortmund and a 1-1 draw at Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal. In Europe, they were edged 2-1 away by Sporting Braga before responding with a 3-1 home win over the same opponents on 7 May. That’s a decent reaction, and it tells you a lot about this Freiburg side: they’re capable of bouncing back quickly, but they can also be dragged into messy games where defensive control slips away.

Away from home, though, the league record is a real concern. Freiburg’s Bundesliga away numbers stand at four wins, three draws and nine defeats, with just 16 goals scored and 32 conceded. That’s a poor return. They’re not just losing away matches, they’re often conceding too much while doing it. Even their better away performances have tended to come with risk attached. The 1-1 draw at Stuttgart in the cup was competitive enough, but the 4-0 loss at Dortmund was a reminder of how badly things can unravel when the press gets broken and the defensive line is stretched. Away from the Europa League, they’ve looked far less convincing.

That said, Freiburg still carry more attacking threat than the table alone might imply. They’ve scored 45 league goals overall and have shown they can find a route through even when they’re not dominating. Their 3-1 win over Braga was a proper statement after the first-leg defeat, and it came with energy, width and direct running. The flip side? They’ve now gone a long stretch without a clean sheet on the road, and the away concession rate is simply too high to ignore. If Hamburg can get into their rhythm early, Freiburg won’t exactly enjoy the defensive side of this one.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has a strong recent pattern, and Freiburg have had the upper hand for a while. They beat Hamburg 2-1 in Freiburg on 10 January 2026, and that result followed a heavy 5-1 friendly win for Freiburg at the Volksparkstadion in August 2025. Go back a little further and the pattern still leans the same way, with Freiburg also winning a DFB Pokal meeting 2-1 in October 2024 and a friendly 5-2 in January 2023.

The more interesting detail is the scoring pattern. These games haven’t been cagey. In this matchup, goals have tended to arrive at both ends, and the recent meetings have regularly produced open football rather than anything cautious. Hamburg have rarely managed to shut Freiburg down for 90 minutes. That matters here.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

We’re backing Both Teams To Score at 4/7 for this one, and it’s the clearest angle on the board. If you want a few more angles around accumulator tips, our accumulator tips page pulls together accumulator tips if you want to turn similar reads into a stronger combo ticket. Hamburg have made a habit of finding the net at home, Freiburg have been involved in plenty of games where their defence has been breached, and the recent head-to-head meetings have been full of goals on both sides. Put those together and this market feels far more solid than trying to trust either defence.

The 1-1 correct score looks the best fit. Hamburg’s home record says they can stay in the contest, and Freiburg’s away form says they’re far from bulletproof. On the other hand, Freiburg still look the more polished attacking side, so a 2-1 away win wouldn’t shock anyone. Even then, both teams landing on the scoresheet feels the likeliest outcome. You’d expect chances at both ends.
