Hibernian — Last 6
Motherwell — Last 6

Hibernian and Motherwell meet at Easter Road on Saturday afternoon in a Scottish Premiership Championship Round fixture that still carries real weight. Motherwell sit fourth on 58 points, Hibernian are fifth on 57, and with so little between them this is more than a tidy end-of-season runaround. There’s pride on the line, of course, but there’s also the small matter of finishing higher, ending the campaign with momentum and, for both clubs, proving they can handle the pressure that comes with the top-six split.

The late-season picture is fairly clear. Hibs have just taken two big away wins, beating Rangers and Falkirk after back-to-back home losses to Celtic and Heart of Midlothian. Motherwell, by contrast, arrive after a narrow home defeat to Celtic and a draw with Hearts, with their last win coming away at Rangers on 26 April. That’s the sort of form line that makes this one hard to call on the result alone. Goals look more likely than caution.

Hibernian Form & Analysis

David Gray’s side have been a bit of a rollercoaster, but the good news for Hibs is that the highs are still pretty high. Their last outing was a proper statement win at Rangers on 13 May, a 2-1 success that came with a lot of defending attached to it. The numbers from that one were messy — Rangers had the shots, Hibs had the big chances, and Hibs found a way through with Martin Boyle striking early and Dane Scarlett nicking the winner late on. That’s the kind of away victory that can lift a group. It also told you plenty about their mood. They didn’t fold after conceding territory.

Before that, Hibs went to Falkirk and won 3-1, another away performance that had more bite than polish. The two home defeats before those wins, against Celtic and Hearts, were tight enough on paper but still left a familiar sting. Celtic beat them 2-1 at Easter Road on 3 May, then Hearts repeated the trick by the same score a week earlier. Those games showed a team capable of competing with the better sides but not always quite controlling the key moments. Still, there was that earlier 3-0 home win over Kilmarnock, which reminds you that Easter Road hasn’t been a soft touch for everyone.

At home in the league this season, Hibs have collected 30 points from 18 matches, with eight wins, six draws and four defeats. They’ve scored 32 and conceded 18 on their own patch. That’s a solid base, not a dominant one. The home attacking numbers are decent, the defensive record is even better, and the blend gives them a platform in matches like this. They’re not all-out swashbuckling. They don’t need to be. What matters is that they’re usually good for a goal or two, and they’ve scored in four of their last five league games. That matters in a game where Motherwell rarely keep things quiet for long.

The flip side? Hibs have still had spells where their structure wobbles, especially when they’re pinned back. Aberdeen beat them 2-0 away in April, and both Celtic and Hearts found enough openings in Edinburgh to come away with wins. You wouldn’t call Hibs watertight. Not at all. But if they carry anything from those last two away victories into this home fixture, they’ve got enough quality to make life awkward for Motherwell.

Motherwell Form & Analysis

Motherwell’s recent run has the look of a side that’s still competing hard but not quite converting performances into points. Jens Askou’s team gave Celtic a proper game on 13 May, going down 3-2 at home in a match that had plenty of incident right to the end. Elliot Watt put them ahead, they kept asking questions, and then the late VAR drama eventually pushed the game beyond them. It was a lively contest, but still a defeat. That’s the issue. They’ve been in games without quite taking enough from them.

The matches before that paint the same picture. A 1-1 draw at home to Hearts came after a narrow 1-0 loss at Falkirk, while the away win at Rangers on 26 April — a sharp 3-2 success — stands out as the best thing in their recent form. Since then, though, they’ve gone three without a win. There’s been effort and there’s been threat, but the results have dried up. Even the 3-1 loss at Hearts and the 3-2 defeat to Falkirk earlier in April showed a side capable of scoring but far too open when the game turns chaotic. That’s a dangerous mix, and not the kind you’d want to carry into Easter Road.

On the road, Motherwell’s league record is decent enough without being a major strength: five wins, seven draws and six defeats from 18 away games, with 26 goals scored and 23 conceded. That tells you they’re usually competitive away from home, and they’ll travel with a bit of attacking intent. They don’t sit in. They’ve found the net often enough on the road to stay relevant in most matches. But the clean sheets have been too scarce, and that’s where the trouble starts. One clean sheet is hard to hang your hat on. This team has gone six without one, and that leaves them vulnerable if Hibs get into a rhythm.

The away numbers also suggest a side that can be dragged into open, end-to-end football. That might suit them when the game is flowing. It won’t suit them if Hibs land the first punch and force Motherwell to chase. They do have enough quality to score — and you’d expect them to have their moments — but their recent defensive record says they’ll need more than moments to get anything from this.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has been pretty balanced in recent meetings, but Motherwell have had the better of Hibs more often than not over the longer stretch. The sides drew 0-0 at Fir Park in March, and they were level again at Easter Road in January, a 1-1 that fits the general theme of these contests being tighter than people expect.

Look a little further back and the pattern gets more mixed. Motherwell beat Hibs 2-0 in November, while Hibernian have had their own strong spells in this matchup, including a 3-1 home win in January 2025 and a 3-0 success at Fir Park in November 2024. Still, Motherwell are unbeaten in the last three head-to-heads. That’s the one angle that lingers.

We Predict: Double Chance 1X

We’re backing Double Chance 1X at 1/2 here. Hibs at home are just the safer side, and that’s the angle. They’ve got the better home record, they’ve just taken two morale-boosting wins on the road, and Motherwell arrive without a victory in three and with no clean sheet in six. That combo points towards Hibernian avoiding defeat, even if it doesn’t scream comfort.

A 2-1 Hibs win looks the likeliest scoreline. Motherwell should get chances — they usually do — but their defending has been too loose to trust, especially away from home against a side who’ve been scoring regularly at Easter Road. If you want a more aggressive angle, both teams to score has plenty of appeal too, but the safer play is Hibs not to lose.
