Houston Dynamo — Last 6
San Diego FC — Last 6

Houston Dynamo welcome San Diego FC to Texas on Thursday morning, 23 April 2026, in an MLS meeting that already feels like it carries a bit of weight. There’s no league table to lean on here, but both clubs come in with different kinds of pressure. Houston are trying to turn a patchy run into something more stable under Ben Olsen, while San Diego arrive with the sort of defensive wobble that can make every away trip feel like a gamble.

This is the kind of fixture that can swing quickly. Houston have been involved in plenty of open games already, and San Diego’s recent matches have had a habit of exploding into goals at both ends. That alone gives the game a sharp edge. With Mikey Varas’ side still searching for rhythm after a heavy loss at Real Salt Lake, and Houston fresh off a tidy away win at Orlando City, the mood around this one is hard to pin down. It’s not a dead cert in any direction. Far from it. But it does look lively.

The numbers around the matchup point to goals, too. Houston’s home profile is usually active, while San Diego have already developed a reputation for giving opponents chances and rarely keeping things closed down for long. Add in the head-to-head meetings from last season, which were anything but cautious, and you get a contest that should feel stretched rather than tight.

Houston Dynamo Form & Analysis

Houston’s recent form has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but the last week has at least given them a lift. They went to Orlando City on 19 April and came away with a 1-0 win, a result built on patience and one decisive moment from Hector Herrera late on. It wasn’t a flashy performance, yet it was a proper away result — the sort of win that can steady the mood in a long MLS season. Before that, they had blown away El Paso Locomotive 4-1 in the US Open Cup, which followed the bruising 6-2 defeat at Colorado Rapids. That game was a mess. Open, chaotic, and far too generous at the back.

If you stretch the story back a little further, Houston have been all-action. They beat Portland Timbers 3-2 at home and Chicago Fire 2-1 at home earlier in the spring, while the 4-3 defeat at FC Dallas was another reminder that their matches rarely drift quietly to a finish. There’s a clear pattern here. They can score. They can also get dragged into wild exchanges if the game loses structure. That makes them entertaining, but it doesn’t exactly scream control. Still, they’ve won four of their last six in all competitions, and that’s not a bad platform.

At home, Houston have shown enough attack to suggest they’ll create chances again here. Their league average numbers at home are solid enough — 1.71 goals per game, 1.68 xG, and 2.92 big chances — and those figures line up with the eye test. They’re not a side sitting deep and hoping for scraps. They get bodies forward, they ask questions, and they’ve been happy to play in high-tempo games. The weakness is obvious too. If the press drops off or the rest defence isn’t sharp, they can be cut open. You only need to look at that Colorado defeat to see the problem. That won’t be easy to erase in one week.

San Diego FC Form & Analysis

San Diego FC’s recent run is much shakier. They were beaten 4-2 at Real Salt Lake on 19 April in a game that told the whole story of their current state. They were exposed early, never really settled, and ended up producing a performance with too little control and far too much generosity. Before that, Minnesota United left their mark with a 2-1 win at San Diego, which followed a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake at home and a wild 3-3 draw away to FC Dallas. Their only win in this stretch came in the Champions Cup, where they beat Toluca 3-2 at home. That was a very different sort of night. Since then, the league form has gone flat.

The road record looks especially awkward. San Diego have conceded in seven straight matches without a clean sheet, and that’s a huge warning sign heading into a trip to Houston. They’ve also gone five games without a win in all competitions, which makes confidence a live issue. Away from home, they’ve been involved in open matches and that suits neither a side trying to grind out points nor one trying to protect a lead. Their 2-4 defeat in Utah was backed up by the underlying numbers as well: just 0.51 xG generated, 2.63 xGA conceded, and only eight shots compared with Real Salt Lake’s 16. That’s not the profile of a team in control.

The issue isn’t just the defeats, it’s the way they’re happening. San Diego are allowing chances, first-half pressure, and too many moments in transition. They’ve often been first to concede, and when they do go behind, the whole structure looks a touch brittle. Mikey Varas still has enough attacking pieces to make them dangerous — the league has already seen them score in bunches — but there’s no getting around the defensive mess. You’d expect them to score in Houston. You’d also expect Houston to get chances against them. That’s where the problem lies.

Head-to-Head

These two have already produced proper shootouts, and there’s no reason to expect caution this time. Houston beat San Diego 4-3 away from home on 6 July 2025, then San Diego returned the favour with a 4-2 win in Houston on 5 October 2025. Seven goals and six goals. That’s not a coincidence. It’s a pattern.

When teams keep meeting like that and neither side shows much interest in shutting the door, you don’t overthink it. The head-to-head doesn’t just point towards goals — it practically shouts them. One of those games was in Texas, too. That matters.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 4/7 for this one. It’s short, yes, but it still looks the best way into the game. Houston’s matches have had a habit of opening up, and San Diego’s defensive record is too loose to trust. Seven straight without a clean sheet says plenty. So do the recent results: Houston’s 6-2 loss at Colorado, the 4-3 defeat at FC Dallas, San Diego’s 4-2 loss at Real Salt Lake, and those two head-to-head meetings that produced 10 and 6 goals. It’s a bit of a pattern now. Not a fluke.

The projected scoreline is 2-1 to Houston Dynamo, which fits the balance of the game nicely. Houston have the home edge, a little more form behind them, and just enough attacking bite to punish San Diego’s soft moments. The only slight tension is that San Diego can still score, so this isn’t a clean call for either side to dominate. If you want a more aggressive angle, Both Teams to Score has obvious appeal. But Over 2.5 Goals is the safer call, and it feels very live.
