NK Istra 1961 — Last 6
GNK Dinamo Zagreb — Last 6

NK Istra 1961 welcome GNK Dinamo Zagreb to the Stadion Aldo Drosina on Wednesday evening, 22 April 2026, in a league meeting that carries very different weight for both clubs. Istra are trying to steady themselves after a poor run and protect their place in the upper half of the table, while Dinamo arrive as clear leaders and title favourites, already miles ahead on points and still chasing the most convincing finish they can manage.

It’s a classic HNL mismatch on paper, but those are often the games that catch people out. Istra have enough home grit to make life awkward, and Dinamo have been open at the back at times even while winning almost everything in sight. The visitors also come in off a draw with Rijeka that halted a long winning streak, so there’s a little bit of edge to this one. Still, the gap in quality is obvious.

NK Istra 1961 Form & Analysis

Istra’s recent story is messy and frustrating. They beat Varaždin 2-1 at home on 20 March and followed that with an impressive 2-0 win away to Rijeka on 15 March, which briefly suggested they’d turned a corner. Since then, though, it’s been a steep drop back down. A 0-1 home defeat to Osijek was followed by a 1-3 loss to Hajduk Split, then a 2-0 defeat away to Lokomotiva Zagreb, and most recently a 1-2 home loss to Vukovar 1991. That’s three defeats in a row, and it’s the kind of sequence that strips away any comfort very quickly.

The latest result was especially painful because Istra weren’t completely outplayed. Against Vukovar 1991 they registered 17 shots, landed three on target and even created four big chances. Their xG of 1.27 was higher than Vukovar’s 0.86, which tells you they had enough moments to get more from the game. They still lost. That’s been the problem for much of the season: decent spells, pockets of threat, then a failure to turn pressure into points. The late VAR cancellations only added to the frustration, but the broader issue is that they’ve now gone three games without a win and conceded in four straight.

At home, the numbers are respectable without being convincing. Istra’s league record at their own ground stands at five wins, four draws and six defeats, with 16 goals scored and 21 conceded. That’s not a fortress. It’s a place where opponents can get joy if they’re sharp enough, and Dinamo are a very sharp side. Istra do have enough attacking moments to make this uncomfortable, but their defensive record at home says they’re likely to give something away. Three straight losses tend to do that to a team. They tighten up, then open up. Not ideal when the league leaders are coming to town.

GNK Dinamo Zagreb Form & Analysis

Dinamo’s recent form is exactly what you’d expect from the division’s dominant side, even if the 2-2 draw with Rijeka last time out stopped the run at five straight wins. Before that, they hammered Slaven Belupo 4-2, thrashed Lokomotiva 5-0 away from home, put seven past Osijek in a 7-0 rout, beat Gorica 6-3 in the cup, and won 4-1 at Vukovar 1991. That’s not normal form. That’s a team playing with a heavy hand and very little fear.

The draw against Rijeka was a bit strange on the numbers. Dinamo posted an xG of just 0.93, yet still scored twice and should probably have taken more from a match in which Rijeka were kept to 0.19 xGA. They had only two shots on target, but the major moment was the red card shown to Ante Oreč late on, which helped swing the rhythm of the contest. Even so, Dinamo did enough to keep their unbeaten run alive. They’ve now gone 11 matches without defeat, and that’s the sort of streak that tends to bend the title race one way or the other.

Away from home, Dinamo have been ruthless. Their league record on the road reads 10 wins, two draws and only three defeats, with 36 goals scored and just 11 conceded. That’s outstanding. It’s also the sort of away record that changes the mood of a match before kick-off. They don’t need to dominate possession in a sterile way either. They can break quickly, they can punish mistakes, and they’ve been first to score in eight of their last ten. That matters here. If Dinamo land the first blow, Istra will have to leave space behind them, and that’s usually when the game starts to run away from them.

The flip side? Dinamo haven’t kept clean sheets in their last three, so they’re not perfect. They can be got at in moments. But you’d still trust them more than any side in the division, and their balance between attacking output and control away from home is miles better than Istra’s. Mario Kovačević will expect his side to take the initiative early and keep the tempo high. They usually do.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has tilted heavily Dinamo’s way in recent seasons, even if Istra have produced the odd surprise. Dinamo won 4-0 at home in February 2026, but Istra beat them 2-1 in November 2025 and also claimed a 3-0 home win in April 2025. There’s been some back-and-forth in the background, though. That won’t comfort Dinamo much.

What really stands out is how often the goals have come. The last eight meetings have all finished with over 2.5 goals, and that’s a huge pointer for this one. When these two meet, it’s usually not a quiet night.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 8/15 here, and it’s the clearest angle on the card. Dinamo have gone over that line in seven straight league matches, Istra have conceded in four in a row, and the head-to-head record is as blunt as it gets: eight from eight for over 2.5 in the last eight meetings. That’s not a coincidence. It’s a pattern.

The projected scoreline is 1-2 to Dinamo Zagreb. That feels right. Istra should get chances at home — they created enough against Vukovar to suggest they won’t be totally shut out — but Dinamo’s firepower and away record point to them finding at least twice. One alternative worth a glance is Dinamo Zagreb to win and over 2.5 goals in the match, but the straight goals market is cleaner and easier to trust. If this turns into a one-way away performance, three goals shouldn’t be a problem.
