RC Lens — Last 6
Nice — Last 6

RC Lens and Nice meet at the Stade de France on Friday evening in the Coupe de France final, with silverware and a huge end to the season on the line. It is a match that matters far beyond the result sheet: Lens want to turn a strong run into a trophy, while Nice arrive with the pressure of the relegation-playoff fight still hanging over their heads.

Both sides have had the final marked in their calendars for some time, but the build-up has not been identical. Lens have been able to keep the cup as the clear priority, while Nice have had to juggle the emotional strain of their league situation with preparation for the biggest game of their season.

RC Lens Form & Analysis

Lens come into the final on the back of an eye-catching 4-0 win at Lyon, a result that underlined how sharp they can still look even when Pierre Sage rotates. That victory followed a 2-0 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain, but before that Lens had already shown good rhythm with a 1-0 home win over Nantes, a 1-1 draw at Nice, and a 3-3 draw at Brest. In the cup, they also beat Toulouse 4-1, so there has been enough attacking output to suggest they can make this final a proper contest.

Sage rested several players at Lyon with the final in mind, and that is the key angle here: Lens were not hiding from the occasion, they were protecting it. The manager has already made it clear that the final is the priority, so a stronger XI should be expected at Stade de France. The only confirmed absence is Samson Baidoo, which slightly trims the defensive options, but Lens still go into the game with the cleaner lead-in and the better feeling from their latest performance.

What also stands out is that Lens have been dangerous when they get the game in transition. Against Lyon, they scored four times and created three big chances, while their previous meetings with Nice have not been one-sided in the final scoreline, even if the match-ups often stay tight. If they can press early and carry the same directness, they should have opportunities.

Nice Form & Analysis

Nice’s league form has been more uneven. Their last outing was a frustrating 0-0 draw at home to Metz, a result that left them in the relegation-playoff place and brought a different kind of pressure to the final. Before that they lost 2-1 at Auxerre, drew 1-1 with Lens in the league, and also drew 1-1 at Marseille. Their cup run included a 2-0 win at Strasbourg, but the overall picture is of a side that has been hard to beat without always looking convincing enough to control games.

Claude Puel has spoken about the need to “give everything”, but he has also admitted that the final has come “a bit out of nowhere” because of the survival battle. That matters, because Nice are not arriving with a calm, settled mood. They will also be without Elye Wahi, Jonathan Clauss, Moïse Bombito, Mohamed Abdelmonem and the suspended Melvin Bard, which is a significant set of absences, especially in defensive and wide areas.

Recent team shape has also leaned toward a compact 5-4-1, which fits the personnel issues and the stakes. That could help Nice stay organised for long stretches, but it also risks leaving them short of presence when they need to push forward. With Lens carrying a stronger league finish and Nice under more strain, the French cup final may ask more of Nice than they have been showing in open play.

Head-to-Head

The most recent meeting ended 1-1 in Nice at the start of May, while Lens beat Nice 2-0 at home in December. The broader pattern is often a cautious one, and seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings have gone under 2.5 goals. That does not guarantee a low-scoring final, but it does show how often these two cancel each other out.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

The main bet is Over 2.5 Goals at 8/11, and the best score call is 1-3. Lens should have enough attacking confidence to contribute, especially after the Lyon win, but Nice’s absences and league strain may leave them exposed if the match opens up. A final can be tense, yet this one has the ingredients for goals, and the projection of Lens 1.0 to Nice 3.6 points strongly toward Nice creating the better chances across the 90 minutes.
