Atalanta host FC Bayern München at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday evening in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie — the first competitive meeting between these two clubs. Raffaele Palladino's side earned their place in this round by eliminating Borussia Dortmund in dramatic fashion, while Vincent Kompany's Bayern arrive as Bundesliga leaders with a 14-point cushion at the top of the German top flight. The visitors are the clear favourites, and with good reason.
Atalanta's domestic form has wobbled heading into this fixture. On Saturday, they were twice behind to Udinese at home before salvaging a 2-2 draw in Serie A, extending a run of just one win in their last three league outings. That sole league win came on 22 February against Napoli. In European competition, however, the picture is different — Palladino's men produced a stunning comeback against Dortmund on 25 February, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win 4-1 at home, advancing 4-3 on aggregate with a last-kick penalty in stoppage time. Atalanta have not kept a clean sheet in any of their nine Champions League knockout stage games, conceding an average of two goals per match.
Bayern arrive in Bergamo in formidable shape. On Friday, they dismantled Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 at the Allianz Arena — their seventh win in eight Bundesliga matches — generating 3.05 xG from 18 shots despite resting key players. Kompany's side have won seven of their eight Champions League games this season, with their only defeat coming away to Arsenal. Across the knockout stage, Bayern carry the highest goals-per-game ratio among all clubs with five or more appearances, averaging 1.9 per match. Their only Bundesliga loss this season came away at Borussia Dortmund on 28 February, a 2-3 defeat that barely dented a 21-win campaign.
Tuesday's tie is the first time Atalanta and Bayern München have ever met in European competition, so there is no head-to-head history to draw on. What context does exist points firmly in Bayern's direction: they are a club with deep Champions League knockout pedigree, while Atalanta have lost six of their last seven knockout stage games in the competition. The Dortmund result showed Palladino's side can produce on the big occasion at home, but sustaining that level against a side of Bayern's calibre over 90 minutes is a different challenge entirely.
My prediction is Away Win at 1.62. Bayern's unbeaten run of five straight Bundesliga wins, their 7-from-8 Champions League record this season, and Atalanta's failure to keep a clean sheet in nine consecutive knockout stage appearances all point in the same direction. Atalanta's home comeback against Dortmund was extraordinary, but Bayern's defensive record — just 24 goals conceded in 25 Bundesliga games — makes a repeat far less likely. The xG projection (1.30–1.81) supports a 1-2 finish.
