Drogheda United — Last 6
Dundalk FC — Last 6

Drogheda United host Dundalk FC on Friday evening in the Premier Division’s final league round, with the table stakes very different for the two sides. Drogheda are 8th and still need a result to help their relegation battle, while Dundalk are 4th with less pressure on the night.

That urgency matters here, especially with Drogheda also having Waterford at home in seven days’ time. Kevin Doherty’s side cannot really afford to coast through this one, but they are carrying a stretched squad and a few fitness doubts, so the balance of risk is real. Dundalk, meanwhile, arrive with a cleaner picture in the standings and a squad that can focus on finishing strongly rather than protecting a bigger objective next week.

Drogheda United Form & Analysis

Drogheda’s recent results have been a mix of useful home wins and costly away defeats. They beat Derry City 1-0 and Sligo Rovers 1-0 at home earlier this month, but their last two league games have both ended in narrow losses, 2-1 away to Bohemians and 2-1 away to Waterford. The performance at Waterford was competitive enough on the numbers, with Drogheda producing 1.38 xG to Waterford’s 0.92, but they still came away empty-handed.

Their home record is modest rather than poor: 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats, with 8 goals scored and 8 conceded. That tells the story of a side that can stay in games at their own ground, even if they are not especially prolific. They have also had a habit of landing in matches where both teams can find the net, which fits the way they have been forced to play in a tense relegation fight.

The injury situation is a real factor. Kevin Doherty has spoken about the squad being stretched, while Warren Davis is a doubt, James Bolger is an injury concern after coming off at half-time last time out, and Jago Godden also looked under a bit of physical strain. That does not point to much room for rotation, especially with a key league match against Waterford coming up next.

Dundalk FC Form & Analysis

Dundalk arrive with a much steadier league position, sitting 4th on 25 points from 17 matches. Their recent form has been uneven, but they did beat Shamrock Rovers 1-0 at home in their last outing, which is a useful result to carry into a derby. Before that, they drew 3-3 away to Waterford and lost to Bohemians and Shelbourne at home, so there has been some volatility in their results.

Away from home, Dundalk’s record is the main concern. They have only one away win all season, a 2-3 victory at Shelbourne on 3 April, and their overall away line reads 1 win, 5 draws and 2 defeats. They have scored 12 and conceded 17 on the road, which suggests they are capable of creating chances but have not always controlled games well enough when travelling.

There are a few selection issues too. Harvey Warren is suspended, Leo Gaxha is still not a fully reliable selection option as he works back from a long ACL layoff, and Mayowa Animasahun is doubtful. That said, Ciarán Kilduff has spoken positively about the mood around the camp, and Dundalk do not look like a team that will approach this with caution. They have a league game next week too, but nothing suggests they need to hold anyone back more than the injury list already forces them to.

Head-to-Head

The recent meetings have been tight. The two clubs drew 1-1 in Dundalk in February, and that continues a pattern of closely fought derby games. Dundalk are unbeaten in the last three meetings, but two of those were draws, and Drogheda have also taken points off them in the recent past. One trend worth noting is that this fixture has often stayed relatively controlled on corners, with fewer than 10.5 in five of the last six head-to-heads.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

Both Teams To Score looks the best angle at 4/7, and the 63% model probability fits the shape of the match. Drogheda need the points more, but their home record is sturdy enough to suggest they can get on the board, and Dundalk have enough quality going forward to threaten too. The xG projection is close as well, at Drogheda 1.6 to Dundalk 1.4.

A 2-1 home win is the call. Drogheda’s desperation, home edge and stronger table need could just tip a derby that is likely to have chances at both ends.
