Shelbourne — Last 6
Waterford FC — Last 6

Shelbourne host Waterford FC at Tolka Park on Friday evening in a Premier Division meeting that matters more to the home side. Shelbourne are fifth on 21 points and still have work to do in the final rounds, while Waterford sit down in 10th on 10 points and are effectively detached from the relegation battle.

There is also a quick turnaround for both clubs, with Shelbourne away to Derry City on Monday and Waterford away to Drogheda United three days later. That does open the door to some load management, but the pre-match feel is still that Shelbourne will go with a strong enough side to try to secure the points in front of them.

Shelbourne Form & Analysis

Shelbourne arrive on the back of a good away win at St. Patrick’s Athletic, where Daniel Kelly’s 81st-minute goal settled a tight game. That 1-0 result extended their unbeaten run to four league matches, after draws with Sligo Rovers and Bohemians and a win at Dundalk. The loss to Drogheda at home on 24 April remains the last time they were beaten.

The bigger issue for Joseph O’Brien’s side is their home form. Shelbourne are still without a home win in the league, with four draws and four defeats from eight matches at Tolka Park. They have been vulnerable at home too, conceding 15 goals in those eight games, so even though the table position is stronger than Waterford’s, the venue has not been a major source of comfort.

There are also some selection headaches. Rodrigo Freitas is suspended, while Zeno Ibsen Rossi, Odhrán Casey and Mipo Odubeko are all unavailable. Harry Wood and Milan Mbeng are doubts. Even so, the broader picture is still positive for Shelbourne, who have more to play for and should have enough quality to control long stretches of the game. O’Brien has already made clear that home form has been disappointing and that the focus is firmly on the task in front of them.

Waterford FC Form & Analysis

Waterford finally got their first league win of the season last time out, beating Drogheda United 2-1 at home. Mark Doyle scored after six minutes, Tom Lonergan added a second before half-time, and then settled it again with a late penalty. It was a much-needed lift after a run that had included defeats to St. Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers, plus draws with Derry City, Dundalk and Galway United.

Even with that result, the overall league picture remains bleak. Waterford are 10th with just 10 points from 18 matches, and their away record has been particularly poor: one point from eight games, with no wins and only seven goals scored on the road. Graham Coughlan has spoken about work-rate and players fighting for their shirts, which fits the way they will need to approach this one again.

There are absences to factor in here too. Sam Glenfield is suspended, Finlay Armstrong is out, and Evan McLaughlin is doubtful. Waterford did show more bite against Drogheda, but their away numbers are still too thin to trust them completely, especially against a home side with stronger league incentive.

Head-to-Head

Shelbourne have had the better of this fixture over time, and they are unbeaten in the last three meetings. The most recent game finished 1-1 at Waterford in February, while Shelbourne also beat Waterford 2-1 at Tolka Park in September.

One pattern worth noting is that Shelbourne have not kept a clean sheet in their last four meetings with Waterford, which gives this match a decent case for goals at both ends.

We Predict: Both Teams To Score

Both Teams To Score is the main pick at 10/11, and that feels right for a game where Shelbourne’s stronger league need meets Waterford’s improved confidence after their first win. Shelbourne’s away form has improved more than their home form, but they still look the likelier winners overall, while Waterford have enough about them to nick a goal.

The correct score call is 2-1 to Shelbourne.
