Sunderland — Last 6
Nottingham Forest — Last 6

Sunderland welcome Nottingham Forest to the Stadium of Light on Friday evening in Premier League action that feels far more important than the league table might first suggest. The hosts sit 11th with 46 points, safely above the worst of the relegation fuss and still with a chance to finish the season in the top half. Forest, down in 16th on 36 points, are in a different sort of scrap. They’re not in immediate danger, but they’ve spent much of the campaign fighting for breathing space, and every point still matters.

There’s also a neat contrast in momentum. Sunderland have mixed a few bright home performances with some wild away outings, while Vitor Pereira’s side arrive off the back of a strong run that includes a convincing 4-1 win over Burnley and a seven-match unbeaten stretch in all competitions. That sounds impressive, and it is. Still, this is a different test. Away from home, Forest have been less secure than they have on their own patch.

For Sunderland, this is a chance to protect a strong home record and keep building momentum under Régis Le Bris. For Forest, it’s about proving they can carry their recent confidence on the road. The table says these sides are separated by 10 points. The numbers at home and away suggest it may be tighter than that.

Sunderland Form & Analysis

Sunderland’s recent form has been a bit of a rollercoaster, and the latest chapter in that story was a brutal one. Their 4-3 defeat at Aston Villa on 19 April was full of action, full of mistakes, and full of chances at both ends. They went to Villa Park and caused problems — Chris Rigg and Wilson Isidor were on target, Trai Hume added another late on, and Sunderland posted an xG of 1.76 — but they also gave up far too much. Seven big chances conceded is the sort of figure that tells you everything. That won’t do against better opposition.

Before that, though, there was a sharper Sunderland. They beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at home on 12 April, a proper controlled win in front of their own crowd, and that followed a 2-1 success at Newcastle United on 22 March. That away win stood out, because Sunderland didn’t just survive the trip — they took it. Between those two victories came a 1-0 home loss to Brighton and a cup exit at Port Vale, where they were beaten 1-0 on 8 March. Go a little further back and there was another clean-sheet win, 1-0 at Leeds United on 3 March. So the pattern is clear enough: when Sunderland are compact and clinical, they can beat decent sides. When the game opens up, they’re far less comfortable.

At home, their record is genuinely impressive. Eight wins, five draws and only three defeats at the Stadium of Light is the kind of return that keeps a team well clear of trouble and gives them a real edge on nights like this. They’ve scored 23 and conceded just 14 in those league home matches. That’s tidy. Very tidy. It also tells you they’re not a side opponents relish visiting, because Sunderland tend to keep things tight and force mistakes in front of their own fans. They’ve also shown a useful habit of staying in games rather than folding when pressure builds. That matters against Forest, who’ve become more confident in recent weeks.

The flip side is that Sunderland don’t look like a free-scoring home side. Twenty-three goals in 16 league home fixtures isn’t poor, but it’s not a number that screams attacking power either. They’re more about shape, moments and making sure they’re still in it late on. That’s one reason this fixture feels live for a low-scoring angle. Sunderland have also leaned into tighter games repeatedly, and their recent home results fit that picture. Can they keep Forest quiet? That’s the big question.

Nottingham Forest Form & Analysis

Forest come into this one in pretty good nick, and their confidence has been lifted by a strong run across league and European football. The 4-1 home win over Burnley on 19 April was a comfortable response after a hectic spell in the Europa League, and it came after they had already beaten FC Porto 1-0 at home in the knockout stage three days earlier. That was no fluke either. They managed a 1-1 draw in Porto, another 1-1 with Aston Villa, and before that they went to Tottenham Hotspur and won 3-0 in the league. Earlier in March, they also beat FC Midtjylland away from home in Europe. That’s a serious stretch of results. Seven matches unbeaten is no accident.

The attacking form has picked up as well. Against Burnley, Morgan Gibbs-White ran the show with a hat-trick after Zian Flemming had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, and Igor Jesus added the late gloss. Forest didn’t need to dominate the ball to control the match. They were efficient, they were ruthless, and they shut the door at the other end. Their xG of 1.00 and xGA of 0.35 against Burnley underlined a performance built more on control than chaos. That’s usually a good sign when you’re heading into an away match.

Away from home in the league, Forest’s numbers are respectable rather than spectacular: five wins, three draws and eight defeats, with 18 goals scored and 24 conceded. That’s not a dreadful road record, but it does tell you they’re still a little less convincing when they leave home. They’ve scored, though, which is the key point here. Eighteen away goals is enough to make them a danger, especially with the confidence they’ve built. Their last two away league performances included that 3-0 win at Tottenham and the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, so this isn’t a side arriving with fear. Still, the overall away profile is mixed. Forest can hurt you. They can also go a bit flat if the game becomes a grind.

That’s where Sunderland may fancy their chances. Forest have found rhythm, but their away record says they’re not bulletproof, and the Europa League run has also kept their schedule busy. Vitor Pereira’s team have done well to keep the unbeaten sequence alive, yet this is the sort of fixture where that streak can be tested. Sunderland at home aren’t easy to shift. Not by a long way.

Head-to-Head

The recent head-to-head leans Sunderland’s way, even if the sample is small. When these sides met on 27 September 2025, Sunderland went to Nottingham Forest and came away with a 1-0 win. That’s the most relevant meeting here, because it’s recent, it’s in the same competition, and it was decided by a single goal. In other words, not much separated them.

There’s a longer historical edge to that sort of pattern as well. Several past meetings between the sides have been tight, and low-scoring results have cropped up regularly. You don’t need to stretch too far to see the shape of this one. These teams have often found each other awkward to break down, and the most recent league encounter followed that same script.

We Predict: Double Chance 1X

Double Chance 1X at 1/2 looks the right call here. Sunderland’s home record is too solid to ignore, and Forest’s away form isn’t strong enough to trust them to go and win at the Stadium of Light, even with their current unbeaten run. Sunderland have taken points off better-looking opponents at home this season, and their 8-5-3 record on their own ground gives them a proper base to lean on. Forest are in decent nick, but this isn’t the kind of venue where you just rock up and assume the points are yours.

The 1-1 correct score feels live too. Sunderland have the defensive platform to keep this controlled, while Forest have enough quality to find a goal of their own. There’s a little tension between the predicted score and the 1X angle, of course, but that’s exactly why the draw fits so neatly into the bet. If you wanted a sharper alternative, under 2.5 goals has plenty going for it as well — the recent meeting between these sides finished 1-0, and both teams have leaned into tighter games more often than not.
